The whole saga reads like a greek tragedy, what with the publishing deal with adult swim falling through because he had already started a greenlight and Gabe's response to that being "Our message to indies regarding publishers is do it for your own reasons, but do not split your royalties with a publisher expecting an automatic 'Yes' on Greenlight." just highlighting what a terrible idea greenlight is.
But hey, you know, you had finally made it but then you had to open your big mouth for no reason and then that's what you get.
Yeah like, I almost feel bad for the guy but since the 'incident' he's basically doubling down on being an asshole on his twitter and damn man seriously?
EDIT: apparently there are also a lot of people complaining that valve is 'punishing' him because it was obvious he didn't actually mean it. Yeah. That's what happens when you do something like that. It's a working relationship. How is this a thing people don't understand? I mean, I guess zara's post about him never having a job ever before explains a lot.
Right, it's a question of being professional; Steam is a business, and the indiest of indies needs to get in the business mindset when dealing with them, or with any mass-market distribution scheme. And clearly he wasn't born with that mindset and never had the chance to acquire it anywhere. His grievance vis-à-vis the Early Access thing is legitimate but it's hard to think of a worst way to deal with it without mentioning rape or decapitating a journalist.
Paranautical Activity was shit. It was one of those deals where he made the game as an alpha, promised more updates, and then fast tracked it to 1.0 status so he could drop development at any time. It totally deserves to be early access.
I've learned to not judge indie devs too harshly for their bursts of irrational behavior because it usually means they're just starting our stopping some kind of medication. Honestly this probably applies to most major game devs too, and pretty much everyone born after 1970 or so. The main difference is that most people can't so easily ruin their careers forever in less than 140 characters.
I see the future's biggest growth industry from here and it's services that monitor your behavior on social networks and stop you if you're about to do something stupid.
Yeah, the real problem is that with the current climate the internet had to be taught a lesson about making even idle death threats. Kind of real unfortunate for the dude but that's just the world we live in.
I don't have a PS3 yet, but back when it was still in stores, I did buy a copy of VC just to be prepared. Still in my closet, still sealed. I feel like we should have coordinated this somehow.
Turns out we don't have to wait long at all for the PC release: November 11th, $20 on Steam, DLC included. Knocks $2 off the price if you preorder, but really, why not just wait another month for the winter sale?
