A Magical Gathering
Re: A Magical Gathering
Are they going to ban a different card each day Tuesday-Thursday, then unban 2 of them on Friday?

Re: A Magical Gathering
Funny you should say that, because at least one day is going to talk about B&R announcements.

Haven't played since Khans block, so I'm pretty out of the loop, but I read MaRo's article. What's the Gatewatch, exactly? Some sort of Avengers-esque planeswalker supergroup? How is this different from whatever Jace was setting up in Return to Ravnica? And apparently they were putting EVERY Gatewatch character in EVERY set?

Yeah, basically. After Battle For Zendikar, there was Oath of the Gatewatch, which is where the first four members (Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar and Nissa Revane) decided to form a team to protect the multiverse. What this meant in practice was that the characters were in places where they were superfluous. Shadows Over Innistrad/Eldritch Moon was Jace and Liliana's story, but WOTC crammed the Gatewatch into Eldritch Moon. Kaladesh/Aether Revolt was Chandra and Nissa's story (with guest star Ajani Goldmane) but again, WOTC shoehorned Liliana, Jace and Gideon in. And they did it again with Amonkhet.
In terms of game mechanics, it meant 1-2 Gatewatch characters were getting printed as cards in a given set, and this has been one of the longest Standards in recent memory. Fatigue was bound to set in.

Man, I thought they learned their lesson with the Weatherlight Saga. The two times I stopped playing Magic coinciding with this kind of storytelling is completely a coincidence, but it feels pretty appropriate.

Re: A Magical Gathering
Well, it's sort of a step up from "I have bred the Ultimate Human and his power is to pilot ships really well", but not a very big step up.
Thing is, they really, REALLY want to build up these fuckers enough that they can be in movies.

Yeah, but at least the Weatherlight story ended after three blocks.
Re: A Magical Gathering
Also they kept most of it in the books. Even Masques block wasn't that much about the Weatherlight Saga directly, it moved some pieces around to set up for Invasion. Weatherlight Saga felt longer than it was because it reached back and tied in all sorts of stuff that happened before Weatherlight, trying to make the random stuff with Urza and Ice Age and etc all threads in the same world.

I like that they took the endless of running gag about an aztec pirate ninja dinosaurs set... and made it.

Re: A Magical Gathering
Completely by accident - it falls there naturally in sequential card order for Legends - Invoke Prejudice is Gather ID# 1488.

Re: A Magical Gathering
what's next, Lili Sexbots
+1: Each sexual partner talks dirty
-2: Target partner sacrifices a testicle
-6: Divide all sex toys target partner owns into two piles. That partner picks one pile. Use the other simultaneously.
but in order to get the sex bot to activate so you can use it, you have to bring two black guys and another guy of any ethnic background into the room

First image un-spoilers (it has already been mentioned that Steamflogger Boss will be in the new Un-Set and that full art lands will of course make an expensive return).

Re: A Magical Gathering
A friend of mine in Scotland actually tested the practicality of the Nerf War card xD

I did some science; it is difficult to hit a 60 card deck from 2m away
I achieved much greater success using my flywheel blaster though, in case anyone is wondering about the Unstable NERF meta.
Re: A Magical Gathering
Those cards aren't in the new Un- set, they're purely promotional.
