Final Fantasy: The Quest for More Zippers

Postby Smiler » Wed Apr 02, 2014 1:18 pm

I just finished playing FF13-2 the other day, and I have to say that it wasn't complete trash. I actually enjoyed the fact that I basically got all the points I needed to kill most crap right away, and most of the challenge came from rearranging my paradigms so I could beat whatever boss I was trying to beat. The only disappointing thing was that in order to pimp out my silver chocobo to be the best racer ever, I had to beat up random monsters in one spot for about half an hour. Luckily the game outside of boss battles is so easy that I just mashed X while I watched youtube videos.

In conclusion: I'm surprised I enjoyed a Final Fantasy game in 2014.

But I actually enjoyed it a lot! I played it while my wife was visiting a friend in Boston for a week, which was probably the ideal situation since it meant I didn't have a reasonable, moderating influence keeping me from getting sucked in to the really stupid but just breathlessly sincere set pieces stacked end to end for 40-odd hours!

Contrast, Final Fantasy X is very not good and my life is regret. Maybe I should go back and finish up 13-3 to mitigate the pain.

The most fun I had with FFX has been watching other people suffer through it, or write intricate fanons that are contradicted either by the limited intentions of the original storytellers or an unfortunate localization decision.

Yeah, X is dull as hell on a replay but X-2 actually holds up amazingly well. If I hadn't done a 100% clear like 2 years ago I'd probably pick up the remaster just for that.

I just bought FFX/2 HD because clearly Bravely Default and Dark Souls 2 aren't enough of a time sink.

I was super excited to try out the international sphere grid in FFX and turn Lulu into a tanky brawler who throws moogles at people for massive damage, only to learn that all of the characters keep their base stats anyway and it makes it more or less ineffective / hard mode to go crazy with people right off the bat. But that was just hearsay, so I might still do it anyhow.

Base stats don't count for much. The bigger problem is that the reason Auron was so good at tanky brawling with the standard sphere grid is because all his weapons had Piercing on them, and Lulu's weapons still don't have that. And a few other factors.
...but is it art?

And then there are the lines on the picture. Because, you know, we're watching a film print of Final Fantasy 7, and the film print has gotten scratches on it from all the times people have watched the film print. Of Final Fantasy 7.

About the only thing more obnoxious is phony lens flare in a video game.

Oh hey, there's a fucking shitload of that in the video, too.

From where the light reflects off the camera that the fucking video game was fucking filmed with.

I think it could use some record scratches and scanlines. Maybe a phone that goes to dialtone when the person on the other end hangs up.

You know what? I don't think I've seen a worn-out film print at an ACTUAL MOVIE THEATER in about ten years.

I like that the lens flare takes place AT NIGHT.

This is like making an entire game out of that part of FFVI where you have to tag the orange sparkle to keep moving.

"Hey everyone! You know that gaming classic from 17 years ago that you all know and love!?"

"Are you remaking it in full HD for next-gen consoles?"

"Sort of!"

"Are you re-releasing the original with up-resed graphics, an updated and more true-to-the-original script, and expanded and new gameplay for people who've already beaten and mastered the original?"

"Nope!"

"... then what are you doing?"

"We're making a casual game for phones based off of a 3-minute-long sequence from the original game!"

"..."

Final Fantasy: Totally Not Temple Run allows you to pay a dollar to unlock a new biker... at random. Getting Shantotto might not be such a bummer, she's hilariously tiny on the back of that road hog.
