The end of the article I linked said that Nintendo is open to input and will consider the demands of their audience. Usually that's a polite corporate way of saying "we will do nothing" but I suppose there's a small chance they're legitimately surprised by the protest and actually care what people think.

Meaning the next generation of the Tomodachi series will allow gay marriage but get protested by people demanding nonbinary gender representation, etc. etc.

The nonbinaries are a much, MUCH smaller group than the LGBT+sympathizers.

Also, Nintendo could add a feature to a game that only works outside japan HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA sorry.

You mean Kirby's righteous fury isn't a feature?

It’s kinda frustrating how all of the headlines about Tomodachi Life are saying shit like “NINTY HATES GAYS” when that isn’t the complete story here.

In the Japanese version, a glitch caused male Miis to be recognized as “either gender,” allowing them to be romanced and married. This glitch caused crashing and save corruption and wasn’t intended, so Nintendo removed it.

In Japan, homosexual marriage is super duper illegal. Japan’s legal attitude towards sex in general is ridiculously backwards, like the fact that it’s illegal to depict genitals in a sexual context in Japan. That’s why all of their porn is censored and has “storylines,” because porn is illegal and depicting genitals is illegal. This is ridiculous. Why isn’t it questioned? Because of the Japanese cultural attitude towards questioning authority and disobeying laws. This cultural attitude is what allows Japan to have “honor-system” vending machines that dispense alcohol despite the country having similar age restrictions to alcohol consumption. Most people in Japan simply hold the attitude that because they were told not to do it, they won’t do it. I recall seeing a documentary where an American exchange student went to Japan, noticed the vending machines, and asked her classmates what prevented underaged people from using them. They simply replied “we aren’t allowed to.” It was against the law. They never even considered it.

Questioning authority in Japan is a huuuuge no-no, to the point that most people don’t consider it. Homosexual marriage is illegal in Japan, and nobody challenges that fact. Nintendo isn’t purposefully excluding homosexual marriage in their games, they just aren’t in a position to where they CAN do that. If a family-friendly company like Nintendo published a game where gay marriage was possible, they would be challenging Japanese law in a humongous way, and that just isn’t something that can happen.

It’s not entirely Nintendo’s fault in this situation. Yes, it’s shitty that they are in this position. It’s really shitty. I’m not excusing them. But it’s not entirely their fault. It’s the fault of the country that they are in. Keep on campaigning and let them know that you want representation. Just do so knowing the full picture.

What I heard was that there are two thing getting confused here.

First is the corruption bug that Nintendo patched out. This had to do with importing saves from the DS version.

The second is that in Japan, users were dressing up Miis in opposite gender clothes to fake gay marriage. This is still in the US release.

Here's the IGN article with the information.

The rest is a lot of white dude explaining about Japan. I wonder how much of that he's learned from anime. He is right that gay marriage is not nearly the current issue in Japan it is in the US, so it makes sense that the Japanese company didn't think of it and NoA didn't think of it either or figured it wouldn't be enough of a thing to balance out the risk of code modification. (okay, it might not be a white dude, but it sure sounds like your typical white American gamer trying to talk about a foreign culture)

Either way there was no chance of Nintendo doing a magical patch when the game literally comes out in a month and reviewers already have copies. Dev and testing times exist. I'm actually kind of surprised with the number of people who don't understand this.
