XCom: Flooding the Market with Dead Poisonlizard Salarymen

Postby Mothra » Tue May 06, 2014 11:45 am

LP now in progress over in LP Hell

Been on a bit of an XCom binge since the expansion came out, and I've gotten to the point where I have every achievement there is but BEAT CASUAL/IMPOSSIBLE ON IRONMAN.

My first three Ironman games started in Africa, and got about four missions in before a complete wipe sent the council into a spiral. Thin men tend to score a one-shot kill if anyone on your team is under partial cover. It's a bit insane.

My current strategy is to not even attempt alien capture until my satellite network is halfway complete. My latest game started in Asia, and I'm making good progress so far, with only one failed mission (escort, 1 casualty) and one council country dropped (the UK).

Tactically, I'm leaning toward patience, though EW's meld canisters make it mighty temping to move in before I'm ready. Also been sticking to the edge of the map, which seems to be working.

Optimistic.

Did Enemy Within fix all of the bugs 2K refused to patch because they didn't want to pay for the xbox version and for some reason wouldn't patch the pc version either? Because I might not have liked a lot of the changes the remake made, but the real gamebreaker was the teleporting alien squads that would show up right in the middle of my squad and destroy everyone I had with their bullshit reaction turn.

And also are there any mods that tweak some of the stuff the game does like alien reaction turns when your guys first see them, and maybe at least let me choose my recruit's class so I don't end up with 1 assault and 5 snipers when all i wanted was someone who could use a medpack? The only mods I ever saw that could do this also made the game ball-burstingly hard.

I played about half of EU with more time spent modding than actually in game. I played through EW completely with no mods and enjoyed the butt off it. Take that as you will.

First off I kind of love that the abbreviation for Enemy Within is EW EW EWWW

I actually went back and played two full games of EU, because the achievements are bugged and some don't work if you do them in EW. For example, if you beat the entire game on a continent in EW, then do the other continents in EU, it doesn't trigger the "win a game on all continents" achievement. :bam:

But yeah, I... have no idea how I dealt with some of these bugs. The teleporting enemy bug is by far the worst. Holy shit, I cannot believe they never fixed that. Can you give me more details on this XBox thing? If there is any reason whatsoever why they didn't just take the fixes they made in EW and apply them to EU, I'd looove to know what they are.

Enemy Within fixes pretty much all the issues I had with the game, save for (1) thin men getting one-hit kills on half-cover soldiers, no exceptions, no matter the distance, and (2) high-percentage misses, which are insane. If I were making the game, anything above 80% would be a definite hit, anything between 40% and 80% would be a maybe, and anything below 40% would be a long shot. The fact that I missed both shots of a rapid fire on a SECTOPOD, two tiles away under half cover, is mind-boggling.

Anyways, yeah, I really recommend EW. I can't imagine playing the game without mechs, at this point, and the added plot content is very nice (the base invasion especially). I wish they'd done something about the lame-ass ending, but eh, I can live with that I guess.

Related: If I beat this Enemy Within campaign on Ironman, and the achievment doesn't trigger because it's not EU, I will personally gore Jake Solomon and lay my eggs in his chest.

Up until June of last year, Microsoft was charging developers to release patches for Xbox 360 games. Some developers found a way around this, but a lot of them just refused to patch the 360 versions of their games. That's why the 360 and PC versions of TF2 are essentially completely different games with the same characters.

Update: Code Black on a routine UFO landing. I had it completely in the bag, then I got cocky and tried for two 65% shots I knew were never going to hit.

Outsider moved in, killed my heavy, all the rooks panicked, one shot the other rook, and well, that was that.

Back to geoscape, immediately get my first terror mission. I send it my remaining troops. Turn three, my sniper is dead (never moved him, opting to takes shots using squad sight), and my medic is bleeding out. Only my heavy and my rook are alive. I set off the chryssalids next turn, kill a zombie, and take a turn to reload. In that turn, one chryssalid jumps on the roof of the building and goes to motherfucking town on the civilians up there. That would later manifest into a nightmarish rainfall of shambling corpses.

I send my heavy and rook into the ground level, kill one chryssalid (I can do MAYBE the full 8 points of damage if both score good hits). A zombie stumbles in next turn, then explodes into a new chryssalid. I score two more direct hits on the youngling, but it still survives with 1 hp. Next turn, it gores my rook, and my heavy whiffs completely. Everybody dies.

Back to geoscape, sell everything, order four more soldiers, move ahead two days, get a council mission to retrieve Zhang.

Think I'm going to call it.

Next Ironman campaign is probably going to be in Asia again. This was going well up until it all went horrifically wrong.

If you wind up with an idiot who has a suicidal disregard for his own safety, you can name it after me!

I demand either an assault or a sweet-ass roboman. Also use my legal name: Yore Buht

I'm probably going to replace the dead versions of you with new yous, as you are all killed.

Started the new game last night, same everything. First mission went well, second went well, third (always on the first crashed UFO mission) everyone died but one guy.

When I start posting screenshots, I'll probably make another thread over in LP Hell, and then link it here.

Has anyone tried a recent version of the Long War mod? They just pushed out a major update and I'm thinking of trying it.
