Yesterday afternoon there were a bunch of Columbian fans driving around all the streets in our neighbourhood, honking and hollering after their win.

Only we quickly realized it was actually just the same guys in the same SUV circling over and over. TeeHee~

One time when I was in college we were walking back from a movie and a truck drove past and people leaned out the window and shouted "FUCK YOU!"

A lady looked at us quizically and said "What did you do to those guys?"

I responded, "I dunno. I assume beat them at football?"

I thought it was cute. People around here are no strangers to nationals (or hockey fans) of one stripe or another driving around town waving flags and honking and the rest after a win. You shoulda seen my neighbourhood after the Greeks won the Euro cup some years ago, whooo.

The fact that it was just this one car (because really, there aren't exactly THAT MANY Colombians in Toronto!), but that they were making up for this deficit with fast driving and extra enthusiasm, put me in mind of the scene from Blazing Saddles where Bart's parents have to make their own wagon circle.

Kind of amazing number of 88'-stoppage time goals in this World Cup.

I've mentioned that the neighbourhood I live in is the biggest Greek community in Canada, right?

SO MANY SAD FACES.

It wasn't for lack of trying - the Greeks had way more shots on goal. But their actual attempts in the half hour of extra time were laughable! Just awful, awful shots, mostly from way too far out, except for maybe the second one made by that Graeco-Turkish player, but even his first strike attempt in extra time was an embarrassment too.

I figured if the Greeks didn't take it during time, they'd lose on penalties. Which is what happened.

And now back to not caring about soccer until 2018.

Man, what the hell happened. Apart from the Greece vs Costa Riva game, this cup cratered after the group stage. Went from being some of the most interesting soccer in forever straight to the bad old days of defensive dullardry. Just awful awful games to watch.

Neymar and Thiago Silva are out for Brazil though, so this cup might've just gotten a whole lot more interesting.

Well, this has been a mostly defensive cup all around. The worse your team is comparatively, the more you have to sink into turtling. It's just different now the teams that were being aggressive before were doing so against much weaker sides, so they could get away with it.

That said, both the Nether Regions and Belgium are teams that run all offense all the time, so the next few games on that end of the bracket will be interesting.

I have no idea how Costa Rica even got it to kicks but it was pretty fun to watch.

Huh. You're saying that immediately after America stopped being in the world cup, it became dull, unwatchable garbage?

Hate to break it to you but the US game wasn't exactly a cornucopia of scoring either.

The pattern appears to be "Do very little for the first 80 minutes, then play soccer".

If you're counting points then the US-Belgium game was a wet tissue.

If you're counting shots then the US-Belgium game is the War Hero origin of Mass Effect.

Now... Soccer matches aren't usually won in 30 minutes, right?

Holy balls this match. The Germans just want to break Brazil in half.

This gets any worse, the Brazilian players are gonna have to start worrying about getting Andrés Escobar'd.

The German players too for that matter... they better not go out to any local clubs to celebrate!

Well, it's official. This is literally the worst game Brazil has ever played. Period.

(previous title was a 6-0 loss to Uraguay. In 1920.)
