I did a quick photoshop of what I think needs to be done to the original sprites for them to look better. It was quick and done from a couch so it looks like shit but here's the idea:

I think that's an improvement but it still looks too...smeary, I guess. Too many solid colors, not enough shading.

There's definitely a reason for that look on a tiny phone screen, but porting a phone game straight to PC is...well, pretty much how SE handles ports these days, unfortunately.

"For instance, players will be able to explore many different areas of Midgar in this game that they couldn’t access in the original─if we’re remaking this world, we want to add in areas like this and depict them with real detail.

I have a sinking feeling that "parts of Midgar that weren't in Final Fantasy VII" is going to just mean "the bits we've already made for Crisis Core".

Depends what you mean. I'd be surprised if they didn't reuse the resources they created for Crisis Core in some way, but given the scale they want for this thing, I'm expecting something more than just one new tent city and a slightly more fleshed-out topside hub than the original game had.

Midgar's supposed to have, what, eight sectors? And how many do we see depicted in the game, 3 of them? 4?

Even if I wanted to be cynical about it, it seems like, once the Midgar Underground models have been created, that's the hard work done; building a bunch of mostly-samey new maps and populating them with NPC's and fetch quests is the easy part.

Course, if that's what you meant by "the bits we've already made for Crisis Core," then yeah, I wouldn't bet against it.

So with FF9 announced for PC, that's almost the whole numbered series available -- everything except 1, 2, 10, and 12.

It's a little surprising 1 and 2 haven't shown up on PC yet, given their proliferation across platforms over the last 15 years. They could show up any time. Probably based on the PSP versions.

10 and 10-2 seem like the next logical step after 9, and they've got nice shiny recent HD versions. They'd take a lot more work to port than most of the other options, but they'd also probably sell better.

12 seems like it would take an awful lot of effort for even the kind of lazy, half-assed port SE usually gives us, and probably wouldn't bring a huge ROI. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon, but stranger things have happened.

FF Tactics has shown up on a number of platforms; I wouldn't be surprised to see it head to PC.

I wouldn't rule out Crisis Core, either; it's got the FF7 branding going for it, plus they've already ported the engine to PC, and they already have an English script.

If memory serves, that great Steam Database leaked that leaked "Basically 99% of worthwhile Vita games are coming to Steam because the Vita is a dead system" included the X/X-2 HD Remaster.

I'll eat a hat if they don't just dump FF12 IZJS onto Steam. Even just in an emu wrapper, not even an HD port.

Does Sony have an officially-sanctioned PS2 emulator for PC available for license to third-party publishers? I haven't heard of such a thing but I can see how it would be a beneficial product for all parties concerned.

Absent that, though, I really don't think it's likely that a third-party publisher would reverse-engineer a Sony console, write its own emulator, and then bundle it with games without Sony's permission or participation.

Then again, that's not so different from what Capcom and Digital Eclipse did with Mega Man Legacy Collection. According to DE it's not exactly emulation; it sounds more like a compatibility layer inside a VM -- but it's close enough that I think it fits the bill of what you're describing.

So, maybe. I'd still expect a port rather than the PS2 game run inside an emulator/compatibility layer/etc., but it's not impossible.

And FF12 remaster announced for PS4. So yeah if there's a PC port it'll probably be a port of that version. Expect we'll see 10 and 10-2 on PC first.

Well, so they are. Guess it's a good thing I didn't get them for the PSTV!

Well, the big problem with Spirits Within that this looks like it's correcting is that it looks like a Final Fantasy setting.

Doesn't mean it'll be good; it's got a good cast but so did SW.

Advent Children already "corrected" that but it still felt like a too-long cutscene for a video game I wouldn't want to play.

They should make a 16-bit Final Fantasy movie. Without voices. Just Text. 2.5 hours of it. Action scenes are played as battles in the traditional FF style.

So in ff15 one of your party members takes pictures and when you set up camp you see some of them. He takes pictures randomly and who knows what the parameters are for what he takes pictures of so you sometimes get nightmare fuel like this.
