Or you could play it on an emulator on PC (and buy a cheap UMD copy of the game if you wanted to own it legally, which you should! I don't know what it's going for up there but in the States you can get it new in shrink wrap for under $20). I haven't tried any PSP emulators yet (since I own a PSP) but Mongrel was just talking about them over in the Valkyria thread.

I don't have a Sony console and my computer's in far too sorry a shape to even think about running an emulator, but I'll keep it in mind when I get around to procuring a new machine. Considering my time situation the game seems like it'd be right up my alley. I've been mostly looking at the various FF7 spinoffs with, let's say, amused disinterest, but I do have a lot of goodwill for the original and I'm definitely intrigued now.

Right, it seems like something they haven't done before and I really want to see what they make of it.

There's a bunch of FF Type 0 tracks in Theatrhythm FF CC, and I thought "welp, music from a FF game released in the last ten years, it's probably garbage".

Anyway, long story short, I'm an idiot, what else is new. There are a few from Crisis Core in there as well and I was rather impressed too (though I can't tell if "The SOLDIER Way" is the best or the worst), so that'll drive my interest further for sure.

Final Fantasy games usually tend to have good music.

XII's soundtrack bored me to tears, and when I watched a LP of XIII I didn't care much for it, so I guess I made assumptions. Which, clearly, yeah, I know.

Theathrhythm has tracks from Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 in it, and Square-Enix has released 100% of them Stateside.

Go buy them. now.

Masayoshi Soken and Naoshi Mizuta are pretty good house composers, though next to nothing like Uematsu.

I don't mean to take a crap on FF12 again but I want to get this off my chest.

To me, this is the most memorable (well, "best", I suppose) piece in the game. It's like a second rate knockoff of the least interesting bits of the Star Wars soundtracks. EXCEPT at 0:56 where it is RAD AS HELL. I love that bit. It last less than 30 seconds. Then it's right back to nothing interesting happening until the song loops around. And considering how ridiculously long some boss battles can get in this game, even the amazing bits wear out their welcome pretty fast.

I think it's the universe's way of reminding me that Hitoshi Sakimoto is in fact entirely capable of composing a soundtrack I don't like, despite my general opinion of his work.

I had skipped over the MMO entries, but yeah there is definitely some great stuff to find in there now that my eyes don't glaze over in ignorance at the thought of them anymore.

FFXIV has had some really inventive and cool boss themes, especially for the Primals. Some of them seem to have made it into the second Theatrhythm game, even!

Okay, but, Ultima.

And Garuda.

And Shiva.

I swear I've heard bands or songs in the early 2000s that sounded exactly like the second movement of Shiva but I've been having a hell of a time coming up with specifics.

Yeah, the music in Final Fantasy XII is not as memorable as the music in literally all the other FF games, but it's not bad. Here are some of my favorites:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOAD58HCB-c (Village of Brazilian Rabbit Supermodels)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZ2rw-VDwfA (Big Crystal)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qq2U6W-NbY (Scary cave)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUp46wc9d0Y (Kinda goes overboard at 30 seconds in but I don't care)

I guess you could say it failed being FF music because FF music is usually memorable... and FFXIII does have memoreable music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWGZFG7HhnI (Will to fight)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsFl3ytBJtk (here's a neat arrangement of the battle theme which is one of the bests)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weewaTuUheQ (boss battle music is really good too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQzPvgG4AcU (this is nice for a rainy day)

As much as FFXIII was a mediocre game, the music was still very good. I would say the worst music in a FF game was 2.

As for Theathrhythm, these are the DLC I want:

FF6: Phantom Forest
FF7: Mako reactor?
FFX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-15xE5U9BCQ (calm before the storm, they even already have the art since one song takes place in this forest)
FFX: Besaido Island, why not?
FFXII and FXIII: The ones posted above.
FXIII-2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VMfRAl ... 3&index=46 (I actually grew to like this)
FXIII-2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49rw1E3 ... 3&index=11 (easier to like)

FFLegend2: Anything would be fine, but this might work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuzHEDY ... fveVcqKS4B
FFAdventure: I already got the second overworld theme so it's all good.

Secret of Mana: This is my favorite soundtrack so anything would be fine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN5eMiST1i8 (my favorite?)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf58TiGtIe4 (so sad)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO2PobIOhiU (of course)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB5tMnWszvk (here's a pretty girl playing another favorite)

Chrono Trigger: Magus's Theme, Corridors of time, give us more.

Chrono Cross: Anything but the normal battle music. Seriously.

I'm trying to think if I forgot anything, which I'm sure I did.

calling a Spelunker sequel/remake a Spelunky clone is like saying Warhammer 40,000 is a ripoff of Starcraft

I think not being a terrible waste of a game is kind of a critical advantage vis a vis Spelunky versus (Original) Spelunker. :|

More seriously, Spelunky is a game that cares about vastly different things than Spelunker, even though it borrows iconography. It's like comparing KotOR and Dark Forces.

EDIT:
What I mean to say is, that if the Spelunker remake/sequel borrows the stuff that makes Spelunky good, then its being derivative of Spelunky, not the Original.

No, it's like saying Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a ripoff of Starcraft.

Well, that sure does look like all the 2D Final Fantasy cell phone ports.

...

...okay, better than the FF6 one.

That looks like a bad RPG Maker game.
