It's such a stupid thing, but you know what's annoyed me nearly the entire game?

Based on the size of their command and their responsibilities, Welkin should be a Captain (or should have been promoted to one by mid-game - the events of chapters 7, 8, or 9 are all a great basis for a field promotion) and Varrot should have been a Colonel (Varrot should have possibly even been a general, given at times the game vaguely implies she's in charge of all the militia forces of Gallia).

On the other hand, one thing that amused me is that the radio chatter in Chapter 17 included a line where some enemy trooper complains "Them again!" which is lovely considering the stock line about "Who are these guys?" that often plays after you take a camp or kill a dude.

Maybe the Gallian irregulars aren't structured the same way the core military is.

(There's a Gallia/gall ya joke in here somewhere, but eh.)

Just burning through a New Game+ like crazy. Already up to Barious (Chapter 6) and yes, so far the reports have appeared in the correct places (though there is no prompt, or warning or any sort of indication, so you need to check the chapter tab every time you open a new chapter).

Mainly I'm using these super-easy missions to unlock the potentials of a whole whack of other squad members who I never used (which you need to do anyway to get 100% complete, etc. etc.). Man, some of these guys are just embarrassingly bad, or complete pricks, or both (Herberrrrrt!). That said, there's still a little bit of a challenge figuring out exactly what to do to earn a A rank on most of them, so there's some interest in the actual battles themselves.

Not bothering with any skirmishes yet, just racing through the storyline, other than finally doing the engineer challenge again so I can get a second KAR 9 for Aika. Managed a C with MUCH cleaner play, but it still took a while... I suspect you can't get an A rank while also picking up the Ace weapon since the detour is just so long and eats so much CP. I'll probably try the hard and expert skirmishes once I'm done levelling the other idiots and go back to my preferred squad in full.

I also played the first battle of Behind Her Blue Flame and started up the second. Plot-wise I haven't seen anything too excruciating other than the awkward accidental sexual harassment moment and that was pretty bog-standard by anime standards. Really nice combat missions. It's tough to use your goons since they're so weak, but that actually made for a really fun challenge. I got a C because I made the mistake of doing anything with the regular soldiers, though I think it's funny that I managed to take the three left camps and actually push right up to Damon's nose with just my regular dummies by the time Selvaria got around to taking the camp. I am hoping that the hard and expert level skirmishes are similarly tough (hard enemies with strong positions that can be dealt with multiple ways) and not tough like the Edy Challenges are tough (more a puzzle where you have to figure out the one and only optimal course that will see you survive).

I wonder how interesting it would be to actually figure out who the WORST 6-8 characters are available to Squad 7 and use them as your squad for extra challenge. All the morons who refuse orders, or panic, or don't take care of their weapon, etc.

Just made it through Welkin's story mission with an A, after three tries. Brutal if you're trying to go on the offensive.

Must've racked up half my kills by positioning my tank over a populated patch of hay and letting them run into my tank's reaction fire.

Also VARROT HAS A STORY MISSION

So pumped

Most of the guys I haven't been using are annoying, or assholes, or timid, or panicky, or... well, you get the idea. But a couple of them are really fun. Melville is a gas. And somehow Cezary is actually growing on me, even though he's a complete - I mean a complete - asshole. He's probably not making the permanent roster (a sniper afraid of heights?! Plus he's a Darcsen hater, fuck those guys), but I still gotta credit him for amusing me.

Melville though... I'm seriously considering him for the permanent scout roster, cause he is clearly in danger of attracting the HAVING TOO MUCH FUN POLICE.

Semi-spoiler for a probably non-canon story that was never finished: Nadine falls in love with Cezary in the manga because she thinks he saved her life. He didn't, he actually got her in trouble in the first place by refusing to provide her cover and it's Marina who saved her, but her earnestness (and adorable catface) eventually makes him come around.

I just can't get over the way he tells off his victims. "That's what you get." In that totally blasé voice that can barely even muster a shred of triumph in his own prowess as a murder machine. Had me cracking up every time.

Aww, I just realized that Musaad's second attack ability isn't like Lynn's. It's just a double attack against the same target (like the final potential some Shocktroopers get).

Oh well, more points for Melville then (though his ability set is kind of eh... it's all evasion mostly). My scouts are still kind of open for competition since the only ones I'm totally set on are Alicia (duh) and Aika, as they're both one-woman armies. Possible options for my other three slots right now are Ted, Juno, Melville, Musaad, maybe some others (I still have some scouts to unlock, like Wavy Gravy).

I did decide to stick with the breakdown I went with early in the last game (5 scouts, 6 shocktroopers, 4 lancers, 3 engineers, 2 snipers) as that's really held up in all circumstances. Still waiting to get a few guys back from random unlocks (like Vyse), but that should happen by Chapter 8 or 9, so once that's done, I'll probably review the squad to decide on the permanent roster.

Unlocked Ruhm with only a C rank on Behind her Blue Flame. Huh. I thought you had to get an A for that?

I probably won't bother using it though. If there's a weapon that'll break the game, it's Ruhm.

Killing Damon is pretty damned funny though.

Game crashed right as I was moving into position to kill Maximilian.

Conclusion: save-scumming in this game isn't cheating, it's pretty much fucking mandatory.

Conclusion 2: Well, at least next time I'll save a turn or so from knowing how the last map operates.

Just beat Jaeger and his pretty sweet five-point-capture mission. Diverting the MEGAHOVERTANK was a bit annoying, on account of you having to wait, but it was alright.

Was ready to reallyyy hate the Selvaria-kills-boasting-fat-guy cutscene before that sweet-ass explosion (let's put two soldiers on guard against the unkillable tank-vaporizing goddess!). Ragnite mushroom cloud was cooler than expected.

What I loved most about the Jaeger mission was the way he kept smoke bombing his own camps... the turn after I made risky 1- and 2- man captures where my soldiers faced a high risk of counterattack. WAY TO GO AI.

Yeah, Jaeger did a lot of jarringly stupid shit. Like, there was a turn where I left the tail of the Edelweiss totally open to him and almost restored from a save because I was so confident I'd just be sitting there waiting for a Game Over otherwise, and...nope, wandered around a little and smoke bombed his own camp. Okay then.

Exact same thing happened to me.

I also ran out of turns with a heavily-wounded Wendy standing between two guys in their camp. No way in hell she'd survive. Then Jaegar rolls up to the camp, smoke bombs it, and rolls away. Thanks champ!

I've been sort-of collecting really crap early Ace weapons (like the KAR 1, etc.) so that if I want to play BRUTALLY INSANE HARD MODE I can equip everyone with the worst garbage I can find.

In unrelated news, Emile taking out the Batomys with the special anti-tank rifle was pretty funny.

fffff I want that thing so bad

I used it a lot in Valkyria Chronicles 2. VC2 also gave you the option to load up an APC and drive it into their camp, clearing the camp with the roof-mounted flamethrower before dumping off a shocktrooper to claim the flag.

VC2 was kind of broken.

I think there are actually two you can get, but they're both in the same mission (Edy detachment 6 - tank escort).

So on the subject of VC2 (and 3), they're PSP games, right? So in theory you could just emulate them and play right now. I'm more interested in VC3 though - I know there's a fan patch to localize it, but would it work on an emulated version?

No idea. PSP is like PS2-quality hardware, so yeah, very likely.

Well I know there's a PSP emulator (PPSSPP) - I have it. It's one of the easiest to use, smoothest emulators out there (It's on par with ZSNES, but with a slicker interface - way better than the best PSX or PS2 emulators).

I just have no idea how those patches work.

Finally re-unlocked all my characters, and also unlocked every special personal potential. Final roster is tentatively (ranked by class in very rough order of overall usefulness):

SCOUTS
- Alicia
- Aika
- Ted
- Melville
- Musaad
(note: Still tempted to use Wavy over Musaad. Thinking about it)

SHOCKTROOPERS (aka the Welkin Gunther home for wayward girls)
- Rosie
- Lynn
- Vyse
- Jane
- Wendy
- Nina

LANCERS
- Largo
- Jann
- Hector
- Walter

ENGINEERS
- Dallas
- Homer
- Karl

SNIPERS
- Marina
- Emile

So I gotta ask: there are a lot of jerks and assholes and irritating dopes you can have on your squad. Of those, who do you think is the most annoying recruit in VC? For my money it's, like, toootally Cherry, but like there are other contenders, like for sure.
