In one of my IRC RPGs, we're looking at hosting an ELEGANT DINNER PARTY for some people soon. We're looking for some sort of party activities other than sitting around eating food and trading stories, some organized fun to have, but since we're hosting some naval officials we're looking for activities of a higher level of sophistication than our normal levels of "sleepover/frathouse" and "swinger party". But also something that would actually be fun to play out in a text chat roleplay and not take up an entire night, so not like ... charades? Anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe some kinda variant on Taboo?

Just for giggles, I'm reproducing the ol' Complex map from Goldeneye/Perfect Dark for use with 28mm wargame figures. Modeling in SketchUp is the fun and easy part, but I might have hit a snag. Namely, Complex is a really cramped map and I'm not sure you could actually move around figures with any of the precision you need in tabletop games.

I've put windows in the walls of some of the trickier spots (warning: big-ish gif) and the tighter walkways have floors that can lift out. I just haven't actually played many of these kinds of games, so I'm not sure how kosher that kind of thing is.

I would go with stacked removable floors (either full building levels, or just what you walk on), myself.

Stacked, removable floors. Pray you're not playing a game that uses actual LOS from model heads.

People like that should be shot on LOS.

But what if he's using Big Head mode?

Then you have a choice of either slappers only or proximity mines.

By the way, in case people haven't heard of it: Temporum is a really cool game (although there's potentially a balance issue or two with some of the cards - I seem to always come up with Gang of Pickpockets and then I just run away with the game from there) that Wil Wheaton decided was 'too complex' for his show. Personally, I think it's just somewhat unintuitive at first - the first game or two felt complex, and then it settled into a nice rhythm of me winning all the time.

(The best was when I got the card that lets you draw a card when you play a card, then doing some shenanigans to duplicate that effect three or four times... I ended up with like 40+ cards in my hand at one point and handily won off that.)

Goldeneye 64 tabletop skirmish

Argue which arena rules are in play for 15 minutes.

Shuffle item cards. No that is not a misprint, there really are that many Klobbs in the deck.

Yeah, remote mine tokens can be placed in start zones. Tough shit asshole.

If a model is completely obscured, it's not a valid target. Yeah this makes Oddjob broken as shit. What you think we playtest this?

Yes, the rocket launcher blast template is total bullshit by design.

If you feel at a disadvantage, move around the table to your opponents side and get a better look at the table layout. Looking is totally allowed.

No Gary, you cannot proxy Bond with a Space Marine Terminator figure. God Gary, are we the only ones who care about immersion in this game?

Make sure explosions last for like 4 turns.

Don't forget that any scatter obstacles- tables, chairs, carts, office pets, etc.- must similarly explode as if they were soaked for six weeks in grain alcohol.

Well, a lot of the maps were in Russia.

The Russians have probably figured out how to make vodka out of dead animals, industrial runoff, or leftover PVC pipe, never mind potatoes vs grain.

This is more narrative than player interactive (though if you have a bard...), but you could have chamber music, and possibly other light entertainment, such as jesters or similar. It's a pretty common and realistic thing to provide. In that vein, so is someone who is a famously good dinner guest. It was not uncommon for people who were particularly good conversation to be invited to such things specifically for that purpose.

Ever since reading some play reports for Sidereal Confluence I have been desperate to actually play the thing, but I don't see much probability of that happening with anybody in my vicinity any time soon. The game might seem intimidating and dry at first glance, but everything I've read suggests that it plays fantastically. Keep an eye out for it, and if you happen to get to play a game, tell me how it goes!

Possibly the best 1-page RPG rules I've ever seen.
