Contra?
Nah.
A shmup?
Hmm... close... but...
Wait, maybe Metal Slug or Super Turrican?
Nope.
Well there are airplane parts that sort of remind me of Gradius or Lifeforce...
But...
Oh!
That's it!
Of course!
This game is just like The Immortal for NES, because you died a lot in that game too.
Oh, wait, The Immortal didn't have a mechanic where you learned boss patterns over several attempts before finally beating them and moving on to the next stage.
So I guess this game is like Ninja Gaiden.
Cuphead is just like... hmmm... I can't think of anything

I'm surprised Altered Beast hasn't come up more when talkin' 'bout cuphead.
I know you're not a beast, nor do you alter, but the shooting, powerups and boss patterns make me think of it way before contra.

Feels like a Treasure game to me.

Wait a minute guys.
I think I know what this game reminds me of.
It's a REALLY popular GOTHIC FANTASY with exploration elements, fake walls that you can destroy by hitting them with your weapon, monstrous bosses that you have to learn by fighting them several times before you can beat them, enemies that knock you into instant kill pits, and it's really hard, but ultimately fair outside of a few cheap deaths here and there. The plot is basically even if you win, it's a cycle and evil will just return again after enough time has passed.
That's right, Cuphead is like Castlevania 1 for NES.

I know we're all joking around in this thread, but I'm not kidding when I say I've tried to deliberately minimize my discussion of Those Games wherever possible. This is maybe the most obvious take ever because of how talked-about the franchise is right now, and the only thing more trendy than hopping on a bandwagon is badmouthing the same bandwagon, but I don't care how it makes me look—I'm tired of analyzing every game through the lens of Battletoads.
