Game musings and news
Re: Game musings and news
Now that the new game urgency has worn off, I stopped bringing my Switch to work because it's pretty unwieldy, and my work bag is little more than tatters at this point. These circumstances are PERFECT for falling off the Animal Crossing wagon, so I plugged New Leaf back in for the first time in like a year. I had no idea that there had been a big free update last fall! There's a bunch of quality of life changes, new Amiibo support, new items and villagers available through the the new campground feature, town initiatives... I still had a ton to do before I stopped playing, and now there's even more.
I forgot how creepy some people are capable of making this game.

Fully beating Mario Odyssey involves 999 Moons. I did it.
I haven't felt this much pure joy in a game in a very, very long time.
...gonna replay Mana now.
wait, no.
Aw yeah.
Re: Game musings and news
As someone on Tumblr said, it's been a year and a half, and we're still not sure if Death Stranding is actually going to be a game instead of a movie.

This is kind of adorable. A wizard in a land of muggles.
Re: Game musings and news
I disbelieve internet illusion
Re: Game musings and news
It was that way when I realized a decade ago that I wasn't actually that interested in trying to make a living off the game industry after all.
THAT is just an occupational hazard, of course. The real issue is that like most costs, it tends to get offset by
being indiscriminately passed along to the consumers.

I mean, I'll give game companies shit myself, but that vitriol is reserved exclusively for outright corrupt or exploitative practices, such as EA loot box economies, leveraging of addiction triggers, or whatever (Or "fellow" players... buuuuuut that's something completely different...).
Even then my complaints don't typically take the form of "AFGUIFN@^%$^( U CUNTS THE DLC SUX FUKK U!! SUCK A MAL CAMEL'S ASS!!!!!!!!$#!!!"

Don't lie. I can hear you in the next room, you know.

Well, that's what I mean! That's for players, not devs!

Re: Game musings and news
Per recent patent filings and investor promotion, EA's latest plan is to deliberately rig matchmaking (secretly, under the hood, of course) in their online games to try and increase retention and monetization.
It would be really funny if this ends up being an arms race between players trying to game a rigged system and EA trying to compensate with new response measures, cause I could imagine the end result being some kind of bizarre online-game equivalent of those creepy clickbot-created youtube kids videos.

Hasn't it always been Splatoon Lore that everything in that universe is the post-apocalyptic squid-kid civilization built on the remnants of humanity and the ascension of marine life?

Yeah, but that's still a little... off. I remember the first game had a joke about finding the body of an unknown older civilization which was the fossil of a guy playing a Wii U. That's a ways from fields littered with human bones.
Re: Game musings and news
ur rly gonna sit here and tell me that finding a wii u is different from finding a field of corpses
Re: Game musings and news
The first game's scrolls ended with the twist that the squidkids evolved from an apocalypse that wiped out humanity. It was pretty explicit in saying this.

Just revealed by Nintendo:
Tripping in Brawl wasn't a mechanics choice, it's just all the human bones that keep popping out of the ground in all Nintendo Universe series.

Re: Game musings and news
I friggin' love it.
I mean, it's Nintendo, so there's every possibility that it'll only be supported by a couple of first-party titles which are made up of a bunch of shallow mini-games.
But as far as potential? This could be the greatest toy I've ever seen. My favorite toys are the ones where you build shit. Being able to build shit and then interact with it in a virtual space is even better.
