Kojima explains why Metal Gear Solid story is so...complicated

Hideo Kojima admits he did not have the entire story put together when he made the first game.

Games journalism, everyone.

More Musings than News but I recently traded up for a 3DSXL and it came with Mario and Luigi: Dream Team on it for free. Now, I've heard that it's basically just a reskinned Bowser's Inside Story which was generally solid. While Legend of the Seven Stars is still one of my favourite RPGs I've played, I've not touched a Mario RPG since then mostly because I don't tend to buy games unless a particular bug crawls up my ass as the right stars align. So with Dream Team being new, in my hands, and free, I play it.

Annnd I like the art! And combat is fun and smooth. And... that's it. There's not really any game here. I get wall of dialogue, walk around a bit, and maybe fight two battles before another wall of dialogue, repeat. The Dream bits are dialogue, minor platforming, two battles, finish line.

I've pushed to 10 hours partially because I've been sick and partially because I really enjoy the combat and actually want to see some of it. I shouldn't have to play a game for 10+ hours for it to open up and become fun. I'm not playing a Final Fantasy game here. Somebody tell me that I missed a setting to turn off/on or something.

(If this isn't the right thread for this, move it. I think it was originally meant to be but who knows.)

Nope, Dream Team was a bad game, sorry!

On the bright side, you can now go back and grab Bowser's Inside Story to see what the good version looks like. Or grab Superstar Saga for the GBA. (Partners in Time was pretty unmemorable. Maybe this is a reverse Star Trek thing.)

But those cost money and aren't automatically downloaded onto my device. How hard do you want to make my life, Niku?

You mean Dust, from the latest HIB, or one of the old ones like Lugaru?

He wanted a game, not a spreadsheet simulator. Probably just a joke in reference to how Phil Fish is a popular guy. Then again...

I'm confused as to how this works. Was it, like, a gift? Surely you didn't part with your own money?

It's a good game, though.

Also: if things continue as they are, it'll be very difficult to behave like a genuine human being in public. For a society increasingly obsessed with authenticity, this is a strange result.

I, er, uh, what?

I agree that society is becoming more obsessed with authenticity while become worse at being able to actually gauge same, but the rest of that just sailed over my head.
