I played a bit of SMT4, feels kinda odd to me still, especially compared to the others. Not as smooth as SMT3. Plus I kinda want to do the All Endings play through to max out the worthless bonuses it grants for Apocalypse.

Haven't tried Etrian Odyssey, yet. I'm wondering if Rune Factory is worth my time. I have a lot to catch up on.

I think this guy wrote an entire article on why men are playing video games instead of working just so he could rant about rubber-banding in Mario Kart.

I assume this exists because of Lyrai holding whoever's responsible for making this kind of decision at gunpoint with a ransom demand of this becoming a thing.

They should localize Seiken Densetsu 3 as Final Fantasy Adventure 2

Mad Catz is filing for chapter 7.

That would have been fine and expected a decade ago when they were putting out crap, but it's a pity to see it happen after they started releasing quality products.

Game review site Brash Games doesn't pay its writers, and removes their bylines if they quit. Boy, couldn't have possibly foreseen that leading to any Streisand Effect.

Two takeaways:

1. Never, ever work for exposure.
2. If you're scamming people into working for exposure, taking away their exposure is probably not your smartest course of action.

I'm curious as to whether this bad publicity will be enough to force Brash Games to change its name.

The guy who owns it is named Paul Ryan, so he, at least, is largely insulated from people being able to find dirt on him in a Google search.

I hear there are some people out there who are very concerned with ethics in game journalism. They should really do something about this.

Live updates from, uh, Saturday, on the wonderful live metaplot event in Elite: Dangerous.

[19:06] <Aesir> https://clips.twitch.tv/ElatedObeseLardDansGame
[19:06] <Aesir> s p a c e
[19:59] * Aesir is now known as Anji
[20:01] <Anji> so who wants to know what happened in Elite today
[20:01] <Blackberry> go 4 it
[20:02] <Blackberry> uh what's that twitch tho
[20:03] <Anji> that... is CMDR Harry Potter, the most notorious player-killer in the entire game, icing the DMPC from today's live event
[20:05] <Blackberry> wow
[20:05] <Blackberry> shitty
[20:05] <Anji> actually it's incredible for reasons that I will now explain
[20:05] <Anji> I think I've mentioned Salome before, the super important NPC that's been all over GalNet
[20:06] <Anji> she's the protagonist of a ~100% canon~ book written by Drew Wagar, who is currently writing the followup
[20:07] <Anji> Drew announced the live event last month I think, where Salome would be ingame and would have to make a 900LY 'trench run' from deep space back to the bubble with a five million credit bounty on her head
[20:07] <Blackberry> ohh, so the event was to hunt her
[20:07] <Anji> not quite
[20:07] <Anji> Salome was in possession of some kind of deep, dark secret about the Thargoids and the political state of the galaxy
[20:08] <Anji> the Empire's kill order specifically said to kill her on sight, without opening comms, and anyone who talked to her would in turn be KOS
[20:08] <Anji> pretty fucking fishy
[20:08] <Blackberry> ah, so she has proof the imperial bastard isn't even an imperial bastard
[20:08] <Anji> much less interesting than that
[20:09] <Anji> anyway so you've got two sides, people who want to know the Terrible Secret of Space, and Imperial loyalists who want to claim the bounty
[20:09] <Anji> well, and people fed up with the meta plot who want to break Drew's toys
[20:10] <Anji> the biggest groups on defense - Canonn Research, the Paladin Consortium, and the Children of Raxxla - formed the Premonition Allied Coalition (or something) to organize a protection detail
[20:11] <Anji> now, we're gonna back up a hot second - have I mentioned the Smiling Dog Crew before?
[20:11] <Blackberry> no
[20:11] <Anji> how about CODE?
[20:12] <Blackberry> don't think so
[20:15] <Anji> okay, CODE were ~gentleman space pirates~ who had a reputation for riding the edge of RP versus out and out PKing
[20:16] <Anji> they got bored because piracy is terrible and eventually formed SDC, who is *all* PKing *all the time*
[20:16] <Anji> anyway, PAC is made up entirely of a bunch of nerd codebreakers who have never met a PVPer they didn't immediately flee from
[20:16] <Anji> and this is a PVP event! they need to recruit from outside
[20:17] <Anji> they need to find a group who knows how to PVP properly
[20:17] <Anji> so they hired the Smiling Dog Crew
[20:17] <Anji> to protect Salome
[20:18] <Anji> now, here's the thing about that, this was like a month ago
[20:18] <Anji> everybody said "hey this is stupid, don't trust SDC"
[20:18] <Anji> but SDC joined their discord and befriended everybody and even Harry Potter was playing nice, doing little PVP drills with them
[20:19] <Anji> some nobody from the Canonn goes on Lave Radio and gives an interview where they're all "gosh it's so nice to see SDC on the side of the angels for once"
[20:19] <Anji> well
[20:19] <Anji> a few days ago, in the lead-up to the event, some new rules come down from PAC high command
[20:20] <Anji> nobody who isn't on PVP detail is allowed to bring weapons to the event
[20:20] <Anji> like, if you're a scout or running interference or just observing, you can't have guns at all
[20:20] <Blackberry> well that's silly and dumb
[20:21] <Anji> in fact, anyone who is spotted with weapons within 1kLS of any star along the route will be immediately killed
[20:21] <Anji> by the PVP wing
[20:21] <Anji> (which is SDC)
[20:21] <Blackberry> so SDC is allowed to kill anyone, even in-faction, that is armed
[20:21] <Anji> this rules goes into effect IMMEDIATELY. a dozen or so nerds get iced
[20:21] <Blackberry> and this is accepted and a good thing
[20:21] <Anji> yes
[20:21] <Anji> yes
[20:22] <Anji> now, people are clamoring to get into the PVP wing, so they can be strapped when shit goes down
[20:22] <Blackberry> and they are then the only ones with any guns in 1KLY of the target
[20:22] <Blackberry> jesus
[20:22] <Anji> SDC says if you want to be in the PVP wing, you have to do a PVP evaluation with Harry Potter
[20:22] <Anji> Harry Potter kills a dozen more nerds
[20:22] <Anji> now, here's where it gets really good
[20:23] <Anji> Frontier puts new options into the multicrew menu
[20:23] <Anji> "Hunt Down Salome" / "Stand With Salome"
[20:23] <Anji> so that people participating in the event can hop into allied/enemy ships and help out or just watch
[20:23] <Anji> PAC high command decrees that multicrew is verboten
[20:23] <Anji> any ships spotted using multicrew will be killed
[20:23] <Anji> by the PVP wing
[20:24] <Anji> (SDC)
[20:24] <Anji> dozens of nerds and bystanders are killed
[20:24] <Anji> the event hasn't even started
[20:24] <Anji> this is still in prep
[20:25] <Anji> so. the event starts. Salome wings up with PAC and the starting gun goes off
[20:25] <Blackberry> who is running PAC
[20:25] <Anji> Canonn/PalCon/CoR
[20:25] <Blackberry> why are they doing everything SDC wants
[20:25] <Blackberry> was this an elaborate false flag from the get go?
[20:26] <Anji> nope
[20:26] <Anji> I do not have an answer for this
[20:26] <Anji> their discord is, uh, not great right now because they don't have an answer either
[20:26] <Anji> but here's the fucking rub
[20:26] <Anji> Salome immediately blows a bunch of jump boosts and rockets off ahead of EVERYONE 50LY at a time
[20:27] <Anji> all of PAC's unarmed defenders are left behind immediately
[20:27] <Blackberry> perhaps because Drew is slightly less god damn stupid
[20:27] <Anji> well, you'd think
[20:27] <Anji> Salome manages to get back into the bubble
[20:27] <Anji> runs out of jump boosts, so she's slowed down significantly
[20:27] <Anji> gets within *one jump* of her destination
[20:27] <Anji> ... accepts a friend request from Harry Potter
[20:28] <Blackberry> noooo
[20:28] <Blackberry> i don't know what that means but noo
[20:28] <Anji> because I guess Drew recognized the name from planning? and thinks 'oh, here's my honor guard'
[20:28] <Anji> uh
[20:28] <Anji> spoiler alert
[20:28] <Blackberry> ... it means he can tell what system she's in
[20:28] <Anji> not the fucking honor guard
[20:28] <Anji> because yes, Potter knows where she is and has better odds of being instanced
[20:28] <Anji> he immediately interdicts and vaporizes Salome
[20:29] <Anji> at which point, the jig is up
[20:29] <Scooter> this whole thing sounds like it would've been a waste of time if not for the double cross
[20:29] <Anji> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/131518209483472896/307973487505571841/genius.png
[20:29] <Scooter> Salome gets within one jump of the goal and is only caught up to because they stop to take a friend request?
[20:29] <Anji> yorp
[20:29] <Scooter> like, what were they planning to do
[20:30] <Anji> I assume wing up for a photo op or something
[20:30] <Scooter> set up a big player event that was just *zzzziiiipppp* guess I'm home!
[20:30] <Scooter> I mean why go through all of this if the guy was just gonna immediately warp to the end
[20:31] <Anji> the idea was to set up a route full of blockades so that people could follow along, but after blowing a bunch of boosts Salome was way off course
[20:32] <Blackberry> why did Salome blow all those boosts, though? suspecting shenanigans?
[20:32] <Blackberry> but momentarily forgetting that Harry Potter was behind them?
[20:32] <Anji> can't be, because they friended Harry Potter at the end, yeah
[20:32] <Anji> I can only assume they thought the faster they could get going the better
[20:32] <Anji> which, I mean
[20:32] <Anji> it worked?
[20:33] <Anji> it was literally just the one stupid mistake, prefaced by all the huge stupid mistakes
[20:33] <Blackberry> my guess would be that whoever was playing Salome was probably briefed on the plans, or followed PAC's planning process, and on the day of was like
[20:33] <Blackberry> "This is a goddamn trap, if I stay with these people I am fucking dead immediately"
[20:34] <Blackberry> and used all their emergency event-prolonging gtfos all at once to get as much distance as they could
[20:34] <Blackberry> but wasn't so familiar with all of the specific individuals involved to realize that Harry Potter was head of the PVP wing
[20:34] <Anji> entirely possible
[20:35] <Blackberry> juuust long enough to stop, accept the friend request, and then get fucked
[20:35] <Anji> so yeah, now PAC is exploding and the community is tearing itself apart
[20:35] <Scooter> so how much money did Potter make
[20:35] <Blackberry> so is the terrible secret of space lost forever
[20:35] <Anji> we were lurking their discord so we knew about this shit, but the rest of the community is just now finding out about the no guns thing and they are f u r i o u s
[20:36] <Anji> no, there were three other DMPCs that everybody forgot about, they made it safely
[20:36] <Anji> also
[20:36] <Anji> the best part
[20:36] <Anji> people found the endpoint of the event twenty minutes before it started
[20:37] <Anji> it was a series of listening posts with a textdump that explained ~the conspiracy~
[20:37] <Scooter> was there a bounty on the other three? if not, then I guess everyone won, except the people who look like idiots
[20:37] <Anji> someone asked Drew about it and he was like "oh. uhhhhh. keep that quiet for now please thanks"
[20:37] <Anji> there were smaller bounties on the others
[20:38] <Blackberry> and they didn't have novels
[20:38] <Anji> Potter I think gets the original 5m imperial bounty, and someone on reddit posted a billion
[20:38] <Anji> remains to be seen if that happens at all
[20:39] <Anji> http://imgur.com/a/R4uSk here's the Terrible Secret of Space
[20:40] <Anji> it turns out the secret is that the previous games happened
[20:41] <Anji> also INRA is still around and they secretly run all three superpowers
[20:42] <Anji> and the Thargoids are going to wipe out the entire inhabited bubble
[20:43] <Scooter> is this related to the generation ships
[20:44] <Anji> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WHu8nWGQqA and apparently they've started
[20:44] <Anji> doesn't seem to be, the generation ships fell afoul of other weird alien things
[20:45] <Anji> well, except for the one that got emptied out by slavers
[20:45] <Scooter> someone should've told them there's a rule against that!
[20:46] <Anji> it's almost like when robbing generation ships is outlawed, only outlaws will rob generation ships
[20:54] <Anji> so anyway, the community is toast and now Drew has to write in his new book that Salome was killed by Harry fucking Potter
[20:54] <Anji> the end, no moral
[20:54] <Scooter> what, is it too late to change his name to Shooty McShootface
[20:55] <Blackberry> oh god the events of the event are canon?
[20:55] <Scooter> honestly, other than the internet name, writing up the whole betrayal thing would make a better story
[20:58] <Anji> yeop. that was the conceit of this event, that it was canon
[20:58] <Anji> and would determine the ending of the book
[20:58] <Anji> it's not a betrayal thing, though
[20:58] <Anji> everybody knew that SDC would turn on them
[20:59] <Anji> it's literally the fucking fox and the scorpion thing
[20:59] <Anji> it was entirely PAC who thought they could trust Potter
[20:59] <Anji> and they cannot answer why they thought this, everyone else in the PAC discord is raking high command over the coals
[21:01] <Scooter> coup! coup! coup!

And an update from yesterday.

[18:01] <Aesir> soooooo
[18:01] <Aesir> ELITE UPDATE
[18:01] <Aesir> one of the major groups involved in the Salami Secret on the 29th was the Paladin Consortium
[18:02] <Aesir> they maintain an IFF bot on their discord server that they loan out to something like 30+ other player groups
[18:02] <Aesir> turns out it's been logging every single channel on every single group's discord and mailing them back to PalCon
[18:02] <Aesir> where they're collated into a searchable database
[18:04] <Aesir> so yeah PalCon has been spying on a good chunk of the Elite community for... a year? two?
[18:05] <TA> LOVELY
[18:07] <Aesir> yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup
[18:08] <Scooter> I wonder if that isn't against Discord TOS
[18:10] <Aesir> I'm not sure, to install the bot you need to grant it admin access, which might count as allowing logging
[18:10] <Aesir> (PS never grant a discord bot admin access)
[18:12] <Aesir> http://i.imgur.com/dplPGks.png
[18:13] <Aesir> fuck's sake
[18:17] <TA> oh nooo
[18:19] <Aesir> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... .24_PM.png
[18:19] <Aesir> for comparison, this is all our (vastly superior) IFF bot needs

Apparently PAC high command was 90% PalCon, for the record.

I don't know what half that shit means but it's glorious. I mean, if I were invested in the game I'd be pissed, but as an impartial observer it's compelling as hell. Not just from a narrative perspective (this is, as everyone observed, a way better story than the one they'd planned, and their players wrote it for them for free), but for the sheer amount of planning and coordination that went into it.

I was watching some garbage anime about players trapped in an MMO (I forget which, I've literally watched so much garbage anime and so much that is specifically that premise that I can't even remember the overall plot or characters of any of them) and they did the whole "hire notorious pvp elite guys to protect their shit/help them with a Guild event and then the PVP guys play nice right up until the actual event where they immediately backstab and take all the loot" and I remember thinking:

This is stupid. Nobody would be stupid enough to do this in a real life MMO.

I guess I was wrong!

If EVE and this are any indication, the people who play Space Sims are literally fucking nuts.

...holy shit, how did I manage to miss the news that Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill had been recovered, dumped, finished, and Kickstarted?

It's coming out as a SNES cartridge in July. Pre-orders were closed in January, unfortunately; I hope there's enough demand for a second run. (I *just* got my CRT TV fixed and I'm looking forward to playing some real, not-emulated SNES.)

Could be Sword Art Online. Was there anything about semen glopping somewhere?
