Game musings and news
Re: Game musings and news
Streets of Rogue is already one of my most beloved games, if this does that but BIGGER it just may be the greatest game of all time

PlayStation sci-fi epic Horizon Forbidden West makes its way to PC
What a time to be alive. I don't need to buy a PlayStation; I have a Linux PC.
...Ghost of Tsushima still hasn't been officially announced for a port, has it? A quick search turns up a few sites saying it has but I've never heard of them and they seem like bullshit.

(okay I have a PS4 and both Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima are in fact available for that. But you know what I mean.)

Re: Game musings and news
It just hit me right now that Horizon Forbidden West with no colon is a very JRPG game title.

A recent Digital Eclipse press release sheds some light on the Wizardry rights situation, which was something I'd been wondering about.
It appears that SirTech still exists in some form (the original company went out of business in 1998 and the Canadian branch declared bankruptcy in 2002 and presumably had to sell off their hyphen to pay their creditors) and owns the rights to the first 5 games, while a Japanese company called Drecom owns the last three (AKA the Dark Savant Trilogy, AKA the Cosmic Forge Trilogy) and the "Wizardry" trademark. Which explains why 6-8 have been available on GOG and Steam for years but the first 5 games haven't.
...also, apparently the Head of Publishing at Digital Eclipse is named Justin Bailey, which is an amazing thing for a guy at a retro games company to be named. I assume he works alongside Director of Marketing IDDQD and CFO Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start.

Unity CEO John Riccitiello is retiring, effective immediately
I still don't think this is going to be enough to get people back to Unity, but it looks like they may be starting to figure out just how badly they fucked up.

Re: Game musings and news
I like how his whole career is now a living cautionary tale where the only parts anyone will ever remember are the multiple episodes where he resigns in disgrace.

Apparently the Front Mission 2 remake in English is machine-translated. The company handling it reputedly has a bad rep for MTLing games into Japanese, and some early English FM2 screenshots do not read like humans were involved. Booooooooo!

The MS/Acti/Blizz merger is complete. Kotick will be departing on January 1.
It's a start. I hate corporate consolidation but this is a company with such a rotten culture that this will probably be an improvement. Not that new bosses will automatically fix everything that's terrible there, but nothing's getting fixed as long as Kotick's in charge.

Hey, they pushed Gates out for sexual harassment and managed to keep it quiet for, what, 20 years? These guys are pros.

Not sure how it stayed hidden that long. Only a sex pest would name a company after their penis!
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

The making of The Making of Karateka -- interview with Chris Kohler and Mike Mika about what it says on the tin.
I really can't praise Making of Karateka highly enough. It's not just my GOTY*, I don't know the last time I played a game and thought "I've never played anything like this." It advances game history in a meaningful way. It's not just fascinating, it's important.
* okay, I think it may very well be the only game I have played that was released this year, but I suspect I'd feel the same way even if I'd fired up Starfield or whatever.
