I sort of skipped the single player and went right into the online component myself. Much like GTAO, it's very much a complicated, tangled mess of systems and subsystems that are largely unmanageable and inscrutable. The leveling and currency is all so arbitrary, and there's a lot of progression tracks for shit you may or may not care about.
On the other hand, it lets me explore the lands as my custom cowboy man and occasionally tie up other players a drag them behind my horse while they complain over proximity mic, so it has that going for it.

I've never touched the online content (and have no inclination to do so) so I can't comment on anything there in terms of quality.
