Yeah, TA's posts notwithstanding it was more funny than anything. >:3

I recently picked up some clay and acrylic paint for something I had in mind for a while and if I can make any of it look one tenth as good as this I'll be right chuffed with meself. (Spoilers: I probably can't. But I gotta try.)

God, sculpting anything myself would end in tears. Hopefully tears of laughter.

I made a shack from wrecked bits for an upcoming game, with an eye to ambiguity so that the wreck might be an aircraft or a ship (so that I can re-use this thing!). The game I have in mind will actually feature a wrecked airship (sadly off-screen. Waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy too big for the tabletop so I made this instead).

I swear, the thing I would love the most is if you just set up incredible stand-still scenarios and had them photographed from various perspectives around the scene to show a larger narrative. Like battlefield set-ups or something. Your miniature game is out of control.

Well, I'll have some in-situ photos from the next time we have a game (I do game reports for the wargaming board I go to).

Is that actual cloth? If not, good job. If so, good job.

The rectangle on top is actual cloth (it's this light fabric I found that looks like canvas in miniature when I lightly paint it as I have here). The other bits are painted paper towel or napkin. They're all formed and held in place by a heavy wash of glue.

Watching the piece come together was a real treat. Photos don't do it justice! If you look at it up close, you can see the incredibly painstaking detail being put into each component, like the shattered porthole window on the door.

The oil stains on the barrel are probably my favorite bit. It actually looks like it streaked down the side, rather than being painted on.

These are some dudes I painted earlier this week (we had a fun game today.)

Image

A squad of army troops, to add to my other filler Russians. Now I have enough for the Bogatyrs league to occasionally call on the Red Army to help out (after all they are military officers!). Here we have three infantrymen (including a scout wearing his fur hat against regulations), a medic, and a sergeant.

Image

A sleeping/wounded man and some pilot types. The middle fellow is brave Italian air hero Umberto Nobile, who is absolutely a brilliant real-life pulpy character and incidentally the first man (sharing credit with fellow-traveller Roald Amundsen) to reach the north pole in his airship Norge.

Three adventurers had previously claimed the Pole, and while Fredrick Cook was derided as a fraud in his own lifetime, only modern research has determined that BOTH Robert Peary and Richard E. Byrd lied. Each came close, but too weak-willed to admit the truth, each falsified his logbooks and records to convince the public they had attained the pole. Nobile never learned it in his lifetime, but he and Amundsen were actually the first men to truly reach the North Pole - and in an airship no less! It really doesn't get much pulpier than that!

Nobile was actually an attempt at 28mm portraiture, so that was very interesting as I had to use several painting tricks to slightly reshape the Biggles face of the base figure.

Image

A few plot points and/or scenery elements. A burnt-out campfire, a cairn of loose stones, a backpack, and a sapling with a banner or rag tied to it.

The odd shoulder-mounted compass, watch glass, and goggle lenses were created using dabs of epoxy glue (a trick I use for gems on fantasy figures).

So I was talking to an older fellow I know and I asked him "Don't you think copter guy looks like Burgess Meredith?" and he replied "...now that you mention it. And the big fellow looks like Fred Gwynne!"

Holy shit he's right!

I've been making little buildy detail things and shit for objectives or just scenery. The luggage is a set of resin stuff made by a fellow I know, so they're just painted. The other stuff, like the dynamite, map, and toolbox I made.

There was a request for our battle reports, so here they are, (links go to the wargaming forum I frequent):

Episode 1 - Fracas in the Taiga
Episode 2 - Samaritan Shootout (this is long, probably way too long)
Episode 3 - Rescue Miscue

I need to get on building more scenery so our games can finally escape Russia's nether regions.

Painted more dudes. This is my Indian pulp League, the Aiyyars.

Image

This is actually the very first league I ever came up with, but sourcing the minis and doing the conversions took a while. You might be interested to know that India has a pulp-adventure tradition of it's own, going back to the Victorian period. An Aiyyar is the Indian term for what is essentially a pulp hero, though usually Aiyyars and their adventures tend to have a mystical or magical aspect (but not always).

Also, some more extras painted last week. The dog was actually found years ago for a dollar in a dollhouse shop. I didn't paint it, it came that way so all I needed to do was base it.

Image

The Red Queen's dress was a rather risky experiment I wanted to try. After varnishing her, I added a second coat of varnish as a glue over the red areas (in small patches, not all at once), and carefully applied glitter as I went with a soft brush. This gave me a true sequined dress!

Here's a .gif to show the shimmer a little better:
