I am a straw man aimed at those who want a comment rating system

I am Autistic and Must Quantify Human Interaction

Yes, and?

This is not a suitable replacement for a post rating system. I feel like it's actually sort of a nonpost, because you'd just have people quoting posts and saying +. And if there is discussion about if a post is good, then this just ends up a shit flinging contest.

Well, if it's a place to argue about the merits of a karma system that's not the main "State of the Forums" thread then I think that's a good thing. The autism snark isn't really necessary, though.

I don't get the necessity of scoring things. The whole thing's always struck me as a sort of distraction based on a combination of insecurity and a compulsion to click on things and assign rankings.

But I realize people want it, and that's the way of the Internet now, so okay, cool.

I don't really see the need to ask "Can we have karma yet?" every few days. The admins know you want karma. This is not new information. It's "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"

That's true. I apologize if it sounds nagging.

It's a place to praise or diminish posts based on their quality or however you feel or whatever. Whether you want to just +1 or give a specific reason it gives you the opportunity to use the maximum possibly character limit, link videos or use image macro responses.

It is a better option than any previous or suggested iteration of karma or post rating and only lacks a running total for each individual user's 'worth'. Since that's apparently not what anyone who thinks karma is a good idea wants anyway it seems perfect to me.

I thought it was clear you wanted this to be the new post instead of karma thread?

We had a thread like this before, before you could attach comments to karma. Then Shinra and Lyrai used that system to hate each other intensely, so nobody got to have karma for awhile. Then we go karma back, but only in good and plusgood varieties, and no comments, and also no record of who gave you the karma (which I liked to use to find old threads mostly), removing, to me, whatever point there was to the system in the first place.

If post rating does come back I would like it to be +/-, and have the list back of what posts were so tagged. If you want to avoid drama just make all the voting anonymous I guess. I personally liked the comments, even the negative ones, but I wasn't ever engaged in a secret flame war with anyone so whatever.

I think there's bascially two different things here.

Some people are looking for a scoring/rating system. I guess I'm not really interested in that at all.

Others are looking to "tidy up" conversations by giving people a designated place to put their little throwaway "That's amazing/awesome!" comments, as if uncomplicated praise needs to be quarantined to preserve the purity of our lofty intellectual discussions. Okay, I could understand that being a problem making conversations unreadable if we were a popular board, but we're not exactly Reddit here (and thank god for that). Anyway, snark aside, that at least is a reasonable, understandable justification for a karma system. But again, I don't really want it.

So what I'm saying is, do whatever you guys think is best, but that whatever you do, you sure don't have to go to any trouble on my part.

You could have just quoted the relevant lines from Thad's post and Karma++;'d.

Mongrel.Karma--;

For shame.

I thought "- Karma" was just going to be titled "Mongrel" :whoops:

No Karma, please. It truncates interaction.

I agree no karma. It's only ever caused drama or an opportunity to drive-by shit on someone.

That's the thing. We had no Karma for several years on the old boards and was there really a "deluge" of posts like that making threads unreadable?

Disciplinary action notwithstanding, I'm going to be contributing to one soon.

If I had the energy, this is where I would link to the (at least) hundred times you simply responded to a post with the Heavy laughing emoticon.

I was always chuffed whenever I got a +karma comment and could tell what post it was for. I like that system the best. Positive only upvotes on specific posts and whatnot is okay I guess. Enforcing positive only poster karma because we can't trust babies not to be babies is worse than nothing at all and I would much rather our drama be aired in public with as many creative insults as possible anyway. For instance:

Mongrel wrote:I thought "- Karma" was just going to be titled "Mongrel" :whoops:

it was but now this thread title is using it instead

Honestly I don't care whether or not we have any kind of karma system, but if we DO, I'd much rather bring back the original comment system given that it always felt like a tip jar sort of mentality to me. Even if some people can't be trusted not to smash it on the counter and start trying to shank some people. It was also something pretty unique, or at least I haven't seen it replicated elsewhere.
