State of the Brontos

Postby IGNORE ME » Mon Jan 20, 2014 5:48 pm

State of the Brontos?

HUGE. HUNGRY.

Welcome to the new board, folks. Obviously we've got some work to do around here, but it's up and running and ready for y'all to start trashing. Few notes:

Currently taking suggestions for the following:
  • Themes to make available via board settings
  • Smileys (I have all the old ones around but there's way too many to make them all enabled off the bat)
  • New Forums
  • Modifications (not that mods are strangely difficult to implement in phpBB3, so don't expect them right away)

THESE ARE THE CURRENT LIMITS AND THEY CAN ALL BE EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND:
  • Maximum post length: 60,000 characters
  • Maximum sig length: 255 characters
  • Maximum image size: 1024x768 1280x1024
  • Max Avatar Size: 150x300 200x400 250x500

Attachments and uploaded avatars are, for now, still disabled. I can enable it upon request, but I prefer people instead just use their webspaces (brontoforum.us webspaces are still available) to host images/files. The reason for this actually has more to do with how storage on this new machine is set up than it does with security.

feed.php may be relevant to some interests. Note that this is ATOM and not RSS.

E-Mail addresses are infinitely reusable for registration, which should make wolf games less of a pain. Alternately we can just set up another board for wolf games? Dunno.

I'm not sure if the server is actually sending out emails for PMs and such yet. I'll fix that soon.

REMINDER TO SELF: Set up ReCAPTCHA. Done. Set up strikethrough BBCode. Also done.

That's it, have fun!

The max image size seems a little too small.

What's the link to the old boards? I tried dinohattan, fossilized, and fossilrecord and none of those worked. Might be good to put up a fixed link?

The board archive is not available yet. Be patient.

What was the max image size on the old forums? Maybe we can find a plugin that shrinks down pictures and resizes them when they are clicked on in-page. In any case, 1024x768 is super tiny.

Something like this I guess.

When the time comes, an administrator (or theme implementer - I don't know where this is to be done) should alter the styles associated with the IMG tag so that images posted that way include this rule:

Code: Select all

max-width: 100%;

This will dynamically resize them to whatever's most appropriate for the user's display. It won't do anything to save their bandwidth, however.
...but is it art?

Also, we'll need a forum games section in which Friday has moderator privileges.

if it all possible, if we could limit the processed file from getting above 200 kb that'd probably save everyone's bandwidth, and wouldn't look horrible at a width 1280 or so. Not sure what's going on in the background, though.

Is there also a way to take us back to the thread when we post? It's so goofy to dump you out to a "Your post was successful" page.

That... that can be put right into the BBCode, actually. Won't have the expand-on-click feature though obv.

I still need to have some sort of logical limit so that nobody breaks the board with giant samurai girls though.

I know, it's annoying as hell. Definitely will try to change it as soon as I get a chance.

I still need to have some sort of logical limit so that nobody breaks the board with giant samurai girls though.

A pretty rudimentary expand-on-click would look something like this:

Code: Select all

<img src="{TEXT}" style="max-width:100%" onclick="this.style.maxWidth = (this.style.maxWidth=='100%') ? 'none' : '100%';" />

You could also have them open in a popup if you do like this (note: I have not tested this one as thoroughly):

Code: Select all

<img src="{TEXT}" style="max-width:100%" onclick="var t=this;var i=new Image();i.src=t.src;i.onload=function(){if(this.width>t.width){window.open(t.src,'_img');};};" />

I happened to have these on hand after implementing them for a different phpbb3 board some time ago.

Heads up, under the display options you can change the forum to the subsilver2 theme which is 100% better than the default, even if it's missing the cut Brontoforumus header.

Still can't figure out how to get more than 10 posts per page, though.

Editing the img tag requires editing some files apparently, so I'll definitely put in Bongo's request but it's gonna have to go on my rapidly burgeoning queue.
