i set up a mastodon instance
Re: i set up a mastodon instance
Have I been banned or did the server run out of disk space again?
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Was down for a bit, back up as of this writing.

Blocked. Blocked. Blocked.
None of you are free from brontosin.

Grid power has been somewhat unreliable today after a line of thunderstorms moved through last night and the power backup did not kick in properly due to what appears to be an inverter issue.
brontosin.space seems to be stable right now. Only one of the power blips actually resulted in a reboot of the host with that VM, but that doesn't help much if the network core is dark.

Okay, that one was me rebooting the wrong machine. Should be back up shortly

Jortage Communal Butt Cloud may provide a useful service for managing the storage woes? I don't know how it's set up for brontosin.

That could be an interesting option if traffic significantly increases. Particularly having a CDN serve the media cache. The current setup is a VM with a 50G boot / database disk backed by NVMe and a media cache disk backed by rotational disks. Right now, the media cache is only consuming about 83 GiB of 1 TiB allocated for it and a whole 16 IOPS at the peak usage I recorded over the past 14 days. Peak bandwidth consumption recorded was 40 Mbps.
Is anyone having performance issues with brontosin? The only real issue I can't fix with the current home hosting setup is AT&T's peering. We have a gigabit pipe and it seems plenty fast to Lady and I, but I don't have any user experience monitoring set up from other networks. I'm not aware of any issues here, but please let one of us know if they exist. There is a performance problem with the crappy NVMe disks backing the database that I will be replacing in the next month, but I don't think it is impacting brontosin given the current traffic levels.

FWIW, I've only noticed the wholesale downtimes that others have.

FYI, I'm looking into increasing my available IPv4 space. Given AT&T's customer service track record, they may renumber my IP block without warning when this happens and the sin space will be down for up to a few hours while I get things reconfigured. I'll post again if I get a more definite time range for this change.

And they yanked my current IP block without telling me the new one, so the sin space is unreachable for a bit.

Should be available again. If you can't reach it, make sure you are resolving the new IPv4 address at 75.8.222.18

Did squirrels get into the basement, or is there a problem on my end?

Not a problem on your end; it's down.

12 Jan 2024 Downtime: Sorry for the downtime, we experienced a 12-hour power outage that outlasted the UPS batteries.
Well I assume y'all are okay now since everything's back up and running, but I hope it didn't get too bad. 12-hour power outage is never good but last week's weather was rough pretty much everywhere. (I talked to my mom in Maui the other day and she was complaining about the cold.)
