Re: Super Smash Bros Next
Historically, Nintendo-published retail-size games go up on the eshop at midnight Eastern time, so if that pattern holds, the game will be available for purchase 13 hours from the time of this post. Not that I'm counting.
Like Newbie, I'm also flying early in the morning tomorrow, so I'm planning to download it before going to the airport so I can play on the plane. Specifically, I intend to unlock as many characters as possible before landing. I found the character unlock requirements, which are very reasonable. Here they are sorted based on how quickly you can get 'em:
Wario: beat 100-man Smash
Falco: beat Classic once
Dr. Mario: beat Classic as Mario
Ganondorf: beat Classic as Link or Zelda
Bowser Jr.: beat Classic as Bowser on intensity 7.0 or higher
Jigglypuff: beat Classic as a character with customizations equipped
Ness: beat Classic twice
Lucina: beat Classic as Marth, Ike, and Robin.
Dark Pit: beat Classic four times
Duck Hunt Duo: beat Classic eight times
Mr. Game & Watch: beat Classic 10 times
ROB: beat Classic after obtaining 200 figures
If you're clever, you can set it up so that you play Classic ten consecutive times and unlock a character after each playthrough. However, I don't know how those requirements are affected by dying, and apart from the one I don't know if there are any minimum intensity requirements.
As an alternative to those requirements, you can also unlock them in multiplayer; every 10 matches gets you a new character, in the following order: Ness, Falco, Wario, Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr. Mario, ROB, Ganondorf, Mr. Game & Watch, Bowser Jr., Duck Hunt Duo, Jigglypuff. I think that the fastest way to get all twelve will be to obliterate the CPU in 120 1-stock matches, but please don't do that.
I've heard a rumor that there's a third set of unlock methods based on Smash Run, but I have no confirmation if that's even true, let alone what those requirements are.
Remember: if you shamefully lose an unlock match, then the character will challenge you again after the next time you do anything that could unlock a character, including a normal battle, so you can keep trying.
Additionally, while I'm at it, there are only seven locked stages. Three of them come from unlocking characters (Ness, Wario, and Mr. Game & Watch), two come from using Kirby's and Pac-Man's final smashes at least once, and two come from playing as Villager and Captain Falcon at least three times in multiplayer.

Re: Super Smash Bros Next
I'll be playing this a bunch this weekend and will add everyone in the 3DS friend code thread.
A few months back I've challenged my friend to a Smash-Off mostly because I was bored and smack talking is fun. Then I escalated it. Winner gets a belt, loser has to wear a crown with the words "King Nerd Loser Baby" in all of their online avatars for a month straight.
So, uh, if you guys want me to not wear a crown, help me make sure I'm good enough by Sunday noon. If you want to SEE me in a crown, fight me and destroy my confidence before the fight.

Re: Super Smash Bros Next
There's a mandatory patch on the emarket right now for online play. So any of you fucking mother fuckers lucky something-or-others getting it at midnight download that shiz now so you can guarantee playtime tonight.
Re: Super Smash Bros Next
My GameStop is not offering a midnight launch, is not reconsidering their decision not to have one, and is not able to transfer my purchase to an Illinois location, so as long as there are no major flight delays, I may be able to play on Sunday. This gives me time to finish off Layton x Wright anyway.

Mine was doing a midnight launch
The only one for miles
It was basically an IRL meetup for the smash boards.
But at least I got the game.

Maybe I'm out of the times for these hip young kids, but isn't human interaction the main reason to go to a big gathering to buy a multiplayer video game that you can play right there on the spot?
Re: Super Smash Bros Next
At my midnight I was pumped to play the demo with people. Everyone had their 3DS.
And all they did was streetpass and wait around and then leave. It was bullshit.

Not exactly Brawl of the Year...
Re: Super Smash Bros Next
I was just there to get the game early, not play with any of them. Most of them seemed to have shown up in large parties anyway that then headed off to some guys house.
He invited everyone because, and I quote "my parents don't give a FUCK if I drink, yo"
I live in the suburbs. He was a white teenager.

Re: Super Smash Bros Next
Best case scenario: an idiot teenager just opened everything in their house to you.
Worst case: you get to stomp them all, drop the mic and walk out before they realize no one there knows who you are.

Re: Super Smash Bros Next
Well I definitely didn't unlock all the characters by doing 1-stock matches against CPUs.
Re: Super Smash Bros Next
So you can only get this demo by having a download code, right?

That was for the week-early preview. You should be able to download it off the eShop now without any issues.
Re: Super Smash Bros Next
Wow, is online play this bad for everybody else?
I tried three matches; the first disconnected before it started, the second was laggy as hell, and the third disconnected partway through.
