Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
1. A Link to The Past
2. Final Fantasy 2
3. Final Fantasy 3
4. Secret of Mana
5. Mega Man X
6. Super Castlevania IV
7. Chrono Trigger
8. Super Metroid
9. F-Zero
10. Star Fox
11. Super Mario RPG
12. Shadowrun
13. SoulBlazer
14. Terranigma
15. Demon's Crest
16. Ogre Battle
17. EVO
The second culling:
1. Two "Gaia" trilogy survive. (SoulBlazer, Terranigma)
2. All of the Write-Ins lost, with the single exception of Sunset Riders.
3. JRPGs remaining: 5 (FF2, FF3, SoM, CT, SMRPG)
4. Western RPGs remaining: 1 (Shadowrun)
5. Adventure/RPGs remaining: 4 (LttP, SoM, SoulBlazer, Terranigma)
6. Shooters Remaining: 1 (Star Fox)
7. First Party Nintendo Remaining: 5 (LttP, SM, F-Zero, Star Fox, SMRPG)
We've got 17 in this "ro16" because of a tie I decided not to break last time. That means one of these matches is gonna be a 1v1v1 with two getting eliminated.
Match ups, as always, decided at random.
First up:
5. Mega Man X
vs
15. Demon's Crest
Arguably Capcom's two best games (almost certainly for the SNES) go head to head.
2. Final Fantasy 2

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
No Earthbound? Time to BURN THIS FUCKER TO THE GROUND.
Nah, let's figure this out the right way. Mega Man X and Demon's Crest both exist as refinements and reimaginings both of their respective franchises for the SNES. I like Demon's Crest here for a lot of the same reasons I like Shadowrun: it hasn't been done again, while Mega Man X continued to be run into the ground with a vehemence. Demon's Crest also oozes a particular sense of style that is entirely its own, not quite being identical to Konami's Castlevania nor the series Red Arremer spins off from in the first place. The multiple forms you can take is a more interesting version of the traditional boss weapon cycle from Mega Man.
Mega Man X has some of the best attention to detail in a game of its era that I can recall. It has fucking awesome flourishes like the stage order changing later stages, fun easter eggs like the fat bat and the Hadouken, and that bad-ass final duel with Sigma before Sigma became a literal joke. It's a sharp, sharp refinement of its prior series and as a stand-alone game a goddamn masterwork. It's just unfortunate that that can also be said about Demon's Crest.

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
It's a runaway for MMX.
Next up:
7. Chrono Trigger
vs
16. Ogre Battle
Fuck. Well, so long, Ogre. If you had to go, at least it was to a worthy opponent.

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
I will pick the excellent execution of a new concept over the near-flawless execution of a tired concept every time. I love straightforward JRPGs but they are definitely the romantic comedy of video games and Chrono Trigger is not a game I find myself going back to.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
If JRPGs are the romantic comedy of video games, then Chrono Trigger is whatever the best romantic comedy is. It's flighty and lightweight, but it effortlessly does everything it sets out to do. It's a meeting of creative talent that never truly came together again, and was unique even for the time. It's a masterpiece in every way. Ogre Battle is absolutely worthy up against it, but as I said before, I don't have a great personal fondness for actually playing the game despite the mad respect I have for it.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
Chrono Trigger is not a game I come back to over and over, but it's absolutely the game I'd turn to first if I wanted to show somebody what was worthwhile about 16-bit RPGs. (EVEN IF I LOVE EARTHBOUND MORE)

Because you don't NEED to. It gives you everything you want the first time.

Forgive me, ghost of Freddie Mercury.
(After thinking about it for half a day before voting, I basically came to Newbie's conclusion)

That's how I feel about Earthbound.
Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
Trigger takes it, but Ogre puts up a fight, losing only 8-6. A single switched vote would have resulted in a tie.
Next up, we've got the 1v1v1:
13. SoulBlazer
10. Star Fox
17. EVO
Only one can go on to the Ro8.

Re: Hottest SNES Game (Ro16)
This one's super hard. Star Fox was done better in 64 in basically every way, but it's still an alright SNES game. It just once again doesn't give me a lot of excitement as a contender in this series. EVO and SoulBlazer on the other hand are both incredibly unique, interesting games. I think it's going to have to be SoulBlazer. There's more variety, more interesting vignettes, and the moment to moment action is more fun. EVO ends up relying on grinding just a bit too much even though I really like its method of telling the march of time through the various level segments, and the sheer fun of just mashing together all the random crap you can be takes the game an astonishingly long way even before you get into the secret human and mermaid options and such. I love EVO dearly, but it's time to let it go.

EVO and Soul Blazer are both beautiful concept art.
