navigating the overworld

Postby Newbie » Tue May 19, 2015 9:34 pm

Travel thread.

Julie mentioned wanting to do something for our five year anniversary, so we are tentatively planning to spend approximately November 5th through 12th driving from Seattle to San Francisco to meet people and see things. I haven't been out that way in almost 18 years, and she's never been, so if you guys are familiar with the areas included and have any recommendation about routes or destinations, we'd appreciate it!

All I know is you're passing through Bigfoot country. Ditch the San Francisco idea and just hang out with the 'Foots.

Well, I haven't been to San Francisco in several years, but I can tell you the things I still remember from being there.

-the Japanese gardens at the Arboretum
-cheap dim sum in Chinatown side streets
-Kinokuniya bookstore in Japantown
-Lark in the Morning (musical instrument store, I think near Fisherman's Wharf. No idea if it's still there, but I got to play the jade flutes I'd wanted since I was a kid. *o*)

When we went for our honeymoon we had dinner at a place in SF called Chez Maman. I'd recommend it.

My younger brother was just there with his girlfriend for GDC. He said that if you and Julie enjoy cycling and don't mind the nonstop winds, biking the golden gate bridge on a sunny day is really fun. Just rent a bike from "one of them bike tents" and bring it back.

They also went to see a magic show at the Magic Theater, and enjoyed it a lot more than expected:

I thought it was going to be lame but I was completely flabbergasted at the entire thing, the magician did an incredible job on everything.

Its on the edge of the tenderloin, so the area's sketchy, but it's good.

He also said to have lunch at Sushirrito, which is exactly what you think it is, and if you're in Chinatown, he liked Good Mong Kok Bakery, which has "cheap good food."

Good luck trying to speak any English there; just point at things that look good and throw money.

The Smuggler had incredible drinks, but was touristy and was not cheap.

There are also Redwoods in Norcal and you can drive through one

Ashland in Oregon has PLAYS about SHAKESPEARE and they are pretty cool but I think they end like in September or something

also you could bring some water? and just like, when you get to Shasta reservoir on I5, just pour it in as you drive over the bridge, thanks

alternatively drive down the coast instead of I5 and you will fall in love with the coast and never not want to be driving on the coast and your life will become a mirthless ruin forever once you leave so I guess don't do that

I5 is pretty sweet. There are lots of neat parks to stop at on the way and you might see WHALES depending on the time of year. So yeah, don't do that.

My father-in-law goes to Ashland for PLAYS a couple times a year. Apparently they actually do pretty well.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, Mongrel. Interstate 5 (I5) is the boring highway that never goes to the coast, so you can't see WHALES on it. There might be parks but you were probably talking about the actual coast highway, Highway 101 through Washington/Oregon and then Highway 1 on the California Coast.

I5 turns into 99 when it crosses into Canada and goes into Lee-Ham Vancouver.

And yeah, Ashland is rad as fuck. I was blessed to be able to take field trips there as a kid to see rad as fuck plays while drinking the rad as fuck mineral water in the town square that is there to make kids make the face I made when I drank it

That cat's never steered me wrong yet...

Is Steve still out that way? Have you hit him up?

I haven't talked to him in years but I've got a phone number that's probably still good if you want it.

We actually hung out a bunch over the last year. Alas, I helped him pack up for Seattle a few months back.

Ah, I thought he said something about heading up that way but I wasn't sure. And again, it would have been years ago anyway.

Weird coincidence. Stiv got me to play Battlestar right before he left and we ended up having very nearly this exact fucking conversation. I haven't actually laughed at PA in years... and I guess I still haven't, but man, that's uncanny.

Yes, Portland is on the menu! I forgot to mention that we'll be distributing useless souvenirs of the Exotic Middle-West as we go; would you prefer your gratuitous trinket to be Wizard of Oz-themed, Tornado-themed, or Hideous, Anthropomorphic Wheat Shock-themed? Choose wisely.
