Exquisite Knorpse 4: Construction Phase

HOW THIS WORKS
I will send you a PM containing a link to a file to download & import into Knytt Stories. If you try to play this level, it will start in the room immediately preceding your area with all of the power-ups the player will have claimed prior to reaching your area. I have preconstructed the following 8 rooms, but they look bad, they're barely tested, and I've done nothing with sound or decoration. After the 8 rooms in your area, you can see the first room of the following area, and passing through that room will put you into a placeholder room where the game will end.

The editor will open this level right to the first room in your sequence, but for reference you can use the above map to see which rooms are yours. Additionally, I have filled the playable area in with placeholders, but the version you receive will have a space carved out for you to expand into, if you so choose. Feel free to replace your existing rooms and expand as far as you'd like.

If you'd like to use custom tilesets, ambient noise, music tracks, or backgrounds, go right ahead; I'll reconcile any conflicting resource names before importing your rooms.

I have to be at work in 5 hours, so I'm not going to try to upload anything until tomorrow afternoon. Expect PMs by tomorrow night.



Need some design hints? Apparently I made some notes while preparing for EK3; I'd completely forgotten about these until I came across them today:

CLUTTER BAD

NO ASSHOLE DEATHS (don't abuse the screen transition)

LESS FILLER ROOMS

DON'T GET TOO CLEVER WITH OUT-OF-GAME SOLUTIONS

CUE YOUR INTERACTIONS APPROPRIATELY

DON'T HIDE THINGS VISUALLY

TELEGRAPH THE ACQUISITION OF ITEMS AHEAD OF TIME



DON'T:
running red spitters


EH:
homing birds?
wall-crawlers that spit three shots


DO:
Simple, straightforward platforming!
Bread!
bouncing spitters
Random-moving spike boxes
laser maze
fuckbug


Kind of curious why I put laser maze under "DO", but I guess that's 'cause I hadn't played EK3 yet.

just so you know, I'm going to be stealing a butt-ton of gradient slots, so when you splice everything together, you'll probably have to re-number all of my files to whatever gradients aren't being used.

I also will be stealing a custom tileset slot.

The preconstructed rooms are squeezed in pretty tight in a couple spots, but you don't need to stick with the existing layout. Everyone should have an 8 by 8 section free with at least one open side for further expansion... but really, if you want to disregard the existing structure altogether and make the layout of your choosing, I'll force it to fit in with the rest with judicious use of warp rules. Heck, I was doing that already in a few spots, since the numbers gave us a pretty knotty initial layout.

Nope. Completely walled off as far as the eye can see. You might have copied-and-pasted incorrectly. Maybe you could PM me the coordinates for the borders in my area, and I'll work something out from there.

Let me see if I'm understanding this correctly. I can edit anything about the Yellow and VOID areas as long as I preserve the connections to the obvious start and end points, and can expand freely into the unallocated space, right?

What items does the player have upon entry to my area?
...but is it art?

Bingo. Upon reaching your section, the player has everything EXCEPT the hologram, the blue key, the purple key, and the yellow key.
