Of course they're currently allies and even CNN is only claiming it's a legitimate failure/accident with a new weapons system being used for the first time, so even Iran is denying it. Ha.

IS personals try to attract brides for their, uh, wonderful young men
See, this is why crazy jihad is so attractive; in any sane country, that guy would be banging on the inside door of a locker, yelling for someone to let him out.

ars technica: The NSA’s SKYNET program may be killing thousands of innocent people
We built robot guns and now we've put robot brains in charge of deciding to pull the trigger. It's not so much that the Day of the Machine has arrived: it's now just a whole lot harder for us to justify our objections when foreign drones accidentally shoot up innocent Americans. That genie is out and the lamp is broken.

This is it kids. It's here. And not only is it here, we gave it a self-parodying name, because of course we did.

Oh my god, Skynet is already self aware. It knows how to draw dicks.
Re: War. War never changes. (Except when it does)
Oh fuck.
Skynet is Korrok.

I think they might be a tad optimistic when it comes to guided artillery shells. I think the army already pissed away a lot of money on that without getting it to work, but hey, we'll see.
Also, I have an intense desire to arm a Zumwalt with these things and take it back in time Final Countdown style. Except we could bring it back to 1980 just to fuck with the Charlie Sheen when the Nimitz gets back and he's all "I really should have seen this shit coming."

Massive NYT longform piece on ISIS and the overall state of the middle east: Fractured Lands: How the Arab World Came Apart
Might post some thoughts once I actually read the whole thing (might, might not... dunno), but just leaving the link here for now since it looks really damn good.

Oh boy!
The two most important words in that headline are "international waters".
(note that I do not think this is actually going to lead to a war. But I do think this is the most appropriate thread for military incidents and tension between the US and China)

Not sure if this is the right thread, but we can move it.
Hey, Hardly Jr, did you turn on the TV all by yourse-
"And we've received word that the Russian ambassador for Turkey has been assassinated on live TV by a Turkish gunman."
...man, kiddo. I really wish you'd stick to Signing Time or Mythbusters.

Fresh evidence that Nixon intentionally derailed Vietnam peace talks in '68.
It's tempting, given recent and upcoming presidencies, to look back on Nixon as not so bad after all.
But he really, really was.

So the latest news out of the Balkans is that the Dayton Accords are under some rather serious strain, the worst in 19 years. Trump's election has the Serbs looking like they might grab bits and pieces back here or there (and they have a Presidential election coming up) and other players are also hoping to make moves. True or not, basically everyone involved over there figures that the election of Trump means the US won't be as interested in enforcing the post-Dayton peace.
Because an unstable Balkans always leads to great things, right?

NPR: Russia is supporting anti-US insurgents in Afghanistan
I guess we've come a long way since I was 5!
Russia is supporting anti-U.S. insurgents in Afghanistan — and through them, terrorists, top U.S. national security leaders say.

Also, you may have already seen this, but female assassins just murdered Kim Jong Um's estranged older brother in an airport in Malaysia with poisoned needles (via NYT)

Ohhhh fuckity fuck fuck here we go.
I wonder how Putin feels now.
EDIT: NYT says the Russians were warned.
That's uh, something, I guess.
