Aliens Vs Things

Postby Friday » Thu Jun 23, 2016 6:50 pm

Hello, Friday here.

<LaserBeing> I don't really like slasher movies, I prefer creature features
<@Friday> Laser is Alien your favorite
<LaserBeing> it's definitely up there
<LaserBeing> maybe
<LaserBeing> Alien or The Thing
<@Friday> oh god The Thing
<@Friday> Don't even get me fucking started
<+Mazian> Strong choices
<@Romosome> that's what we need
<@Romosome> guys
<@Romosome> if we're doing shameless horror crossovers
<@Romosome> Alien vs The Thing
<@Romosome> thing-infested xenomorphs
<@Friday> Thing wins, flawless assimilation
<LaserBeing> would it though?
<@Romosome> yeah it'd be more x than vs
<LaserBeing> acid blood ya know
<@Friday> haha who knows
<@Romosome> huh
<@Friday> yeah maybe Xenos would be immunue
<@Romosome> yeah if you set it up so the aliens couldn't be assimilated
<@Romosome> that would be interesting
<Kazz> i wa thinking about this a moment ago
<Kazz> and instead of bringing it up i just sat and thought very hard
<LaserBeing> now, could the aliens incubate inside an assimilated thing?
<LaserBeing> and if so
<@Romosome> oh shit
<LaserBeing> would they come out as a Thinglien?
<Kazz> then i wondered what if the things took over body snatchers who had snatched xenomorphs
<@Romosome> yeah you gotta have thinglien
<@Romosome> Thingalien
<@Romosome> thingaling
<@Romosome> do the body snatchers have like
<@Romosome> "true" anatomy though
<@Romosome> I thought they just replaced humans
<@Romosome> like do claws pop out of them or something
<@Friday> great
<@Friday> now you guys are making me want to run Aliens Vs Things
<@Friday> like VvW

A Game for 20ish players.

You are crew on the Weylan Yutani Nostradamus. Suddenly, you get a distress signal. Landing on the planet, your science guy brings a giant alien egg onboard. A dog also runs onto the ship.

Crew Roles

Captain: Can shoot another player at night with his Firearm, the only one on the ship. If they're an Alien or Crew, they die. If they're a Thing, they are revealed. (You can't kill Things with guns, but it does expose them.)

Doctor: Tests one player's blood at night. (Seer.)

Engineer: Can build a turret to protect another player from being killed or assimilated. Cannot turret himself. (Baner.)

Science Officer: Has the wire. He can use it during the day, once per game, to test someone. Cannot do this until day 3. At which point he could be a Thing.

The Synthetic Lifeform: His orders don't include your survival. If he wins, everyone else loses. (Weretiger.)

Alien Roles

The Queen: Survives if shot by the Captain. Begins with two eggs laid, and lays one egg per night. If not found and destroyed, they will hatch into Attack Xenomorphs in 3 day/night cycles. If Killed, a regular Xenomorph becomes the New Queen, but New Queens are immature and take 1 full day/night cycle to begin laying eggs.

Xenomorph: (Wolf)

Thing Roles

None. They work just like Things in the other game do. All Things are alike, and they assimilate one target per day. Cannot assimilate Xenomorphs.

Gameplay

Each day, the players get together to vote to eject someone into space. That player is dead. (And identified as Crew/Alien/Thing) After that, the players must delegate where on the ship they will search for Eggs.

Crew Quarters
Captain's Quarters
The Mess
Main Computer
Main Engineering
Hold Section A
Hold Section B
Hold Section C
Hold Section D
Gym
Cryo-Stasis
Main Airlock
Escape Shuttle A
Escape Shuttle B

Each player has a 1/3 chance to find an Egg. You can send multiple players to check the same place. Sending 3 people 100%s that you'll find an egg if any are there, however, Xenomorphs, though they are sent along, do not count toward searches. They also prevent that section from being searched at all, so sending 3 people to a place with an Egg will return no result if one of them is a Xenomorph.

When an egg hatches, you will be told where it hatched from. This can be used to narrow your search for Xenomorphs.

Xenomorphs only get a kill every other night (even nights, so 2, 4, 6, etc.). They win when the total number of Attack Xenomorphs is equal to or greater than the number of remaining players. Normal Xenomorphs (Queen included) count as players and not Xenomorphs. On odd nights, (1, 3, 5, etc) the Queen uses her exceptional intelligence to sniff someone and scry them.

Wincons:

Crew: Kill all the bads, or avoid anyone else's win con from triggering until Night 10, at which point the ship gets back to Earth and the scanners will automatically identify and laser any non-humans. Note that if The Synthetic Lifeform is still alive at this point, he will pilot the ship into Earth, winning the game for himself.

Aliens: Attack Xenomorphs equal to or greater than number of remaining players.

Things: Total number of assimilated players has a majority. A tie isn't enough.

FAQ:

Q: Are you going to get enough players to run this game Friday?
A: Are there even 20 people left on this forum

Q: Then why did you
A: for fun

Q: This doesn't seem balanced
A: It probably isn't

Q: if I get the Captain role can I roleplay as Tom Skerritt
A: Yes this is actually required

Q: if I get the Synthetic Lifeform Role and I roleplay as Bilbo
A: No you have to be Father Vito Cornelius from The Fifth Element

I'm always up for a game. But where are we going to find 17 more players?

Yeah, I don't expect to actually run this. I put it up in case of some sort of miracle, and for fun. I couldn't even get 12 people for Thing7.

I will, of course, run it if I get the players to do so.

Kazz's Review of 'Aliens Vs Things' by Friday Entertainment

This review was based on a pre-release build of the game and may not accurately reflect the current user experience.

Holy hell, what a steaming shit-show. Let's get started right away with this intro cutscene:

Friday wrote:Hello, Friday here.

This conversation goes on for another few minutes, but the essential conceit is this: "Who knows?" The scene is designed to set up the game as some sort of tongue-in-cheek fan-service crossover. Now that you're hyped up by the concept, you're introduced to the actual plot of the game:

You are crew on the Weylan Yutani Nostradamus. Suddenly, you get a distress signal. Landing on the planet, your science guy brings a giant alien egg onboard. A dog also runs onto the ship.

What?! I just listened to six people talk about this concept, passionately and at length, and then the storyline for the game fits on a fortune cookie. Nonsense! Why is an essentially unarmed science vessel answering a distress signal? Where's the USCM? Jeez!

Next, we get introduced to all sorts of one-dimensional characters who are literally (literally!) named after their professions.

So you're supposed to tell me that one of these characters can walk up to the QUEEN ALIEN and be like, HEY, NO IDEA IF YOU'RE A HUGE BLACK ALIEN, LET ME GET MY MICROSCOPE!

Absurd. Totally absurd.

Each day, the players get together to vote to eject someone into space. That player is dead. (And identified as Crew/Alien/Thing) After that, the players must delegate where on the ship they will search for Eggs.

Oh my God, what is this? Easter?! Ha ha ha, oh my God!

A gun-wielding maniac and his best friend Kamikaze Robot try to entice a bunch of geeks to airlock each other in time for the apocalypse.

GREAT IDEA WHO DOESN'T WANNA--

I MEAN WAIT!

If our numbers are flagging, we should press-gang strays from poorly-guarded merchant forums. We'll get this ship crewed yet.
