Brontos Are Doin' It for Themselves

Postby TedBelmont » Wed Jan 29, 2014 9:36 pm

So I finally got tired enough of having GBA games floating all over my house, that while I was out buying tools for my woodworking project(which is now on hold because Joxam insists that I steal one of my neighbor's doors) I picked up one of these:

It works pretty well! Also, it was under $15, on sale, so that's a plus.

Wow, wait, hold on a sec.

*blows dust off the thread title*

Is this an old, unused DIY thread?

I've said it before, to the dread of people who know me too well: I can make something with that.

Nothing says DIY like buying a plastic organizer box, and then putting carts in it.

That's why you do the only sensible thing: make a themed bandsaw box.

At last check, Romo is using it to hold some GBA Zelda games.

I was just seeing if there was a DIY thread before going and making one. You say "thread necromancy," I say "thread upcycling."

And I remember that name from the older boards. I wonder whatever happened to hi- *reads post history* GAH. Okay. Wow.

I'm told my boy was scooting around a computer mouse as if it were a toy car. I should probably find him a good one with no parts he can choke on, which is turning out to be trickier than I thought.

In the meantime, I remembered I'm still a Homeworld fan. That got me thinking, which may or may not be a good thing:

Currently sitting at about 4 11/16" long, which would put it at around 1:464 size if I weren't just eyeballing it. Planning on building it from slabs of basswood so I can just knock it out on the bandsaw. Still need to figure out the rear ramp. May or may not add details like racks, vents, windows, and tire treads. It'd be nice to make the suspension work, but I'm not sure how I'd manage. Might leave off the gun; I'm squeamish about war toys, even though he's just a baby.

Speaking of DIY stuff, Sugru is on sale for $14 instead of the usual $20ish. Lowest it's been.

Not an affiliate link. Just thought it'd be useful for repairs, and it sprang to mind due to the Mongrel fridge post in another thread.

Price trends for it via CamelCamelCamel.

I've seen that stuff around on Instructables and I saw that fridge problem earlier, but I've never really looked into the stuff*. So it's like some kind of rubber that can be shaped like air-dry clay?

*probably because a lot of the stuff I see is a bit silly for such expensive stuff.

I'm a little confused about how to use Sugru. If you only need a little bit of it, can you seal the package back up and save the rest of that pack for later? Or does an 8-pack mean, basically, 8 uses of it, because once there's air it starts to set?

8 uses.

I didn't make this. Just throwing it here because this is the DIY thread now, I guess.

I'm normally kind of horrified by backyard coasters, but all that CAD detail and background is reassuring.

...wait, was that another coaster in the background of that POV shot?

So, what do you do when you have an aging smartphone awaiting replacement? Obviously, make a cheap knock-off iDroid case.

I regret nothing/everything.

So, I'm going to try and make a thing.

The template looks like it was made to be laser cut, but I'm going to 3D print the parts instead.

Awesome.

My dad used his 3D printer last weekend to make me a weirding way gun and voice module for my Halloween costume. You get a lot of use out of it this time of year!

I'll post pics after the weekend's out.

Oh no, Jr.'s been there for a while. He's just there to give that portal-gun-in-progress some scale.

My mom says she wants to make some of those fairy garden things with some of her potted plants. You know, where people add little cottages or furniture to their flowers and stuff?

She also plays World of Warcraft, so...

Still needs a bit of post-printing cleanup. Maybe some acetone polishing, definitely some paint.
