Re: Let's all go to the movies~
Initial reviews for Suicide Squad are... not good. I guess it wouldn't surprise it. I mean no matter that they "learned" it was bad before releasing it, it was still a movie which was poorly filmed in the first place and then was sent through a mini-development hell where suits ordered staff to MAKE IT FUN.
basically, I don't know why anyone figured that the Snakes On A Plane recipe would result in a great movie.

Re: Let's all go to the movies~
are you implying the movie would have been fine before they tried to "make it fun"?

Haha, no I'm sure it would have been much worse (if in fact it really is all that bad... maybe it might still be okay?).
Hence my analogy.

I'm seeing mixed reviews. Consensus seems to be that it's not especially well-written but it's pretty and has a good cast. Professional reviewers say it's no fun but I'm seeing some people who aren't critics say it is.

What'll really be interesting is if the original cut ever makes it out anywhere to compare the two.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
I'm still gonna go see it, probably this weekend. The cast came to the office on Monday and gave a talk, which was awesome. Although I showed up too late to get a really good seat, but too early to be stuck in the standing-room-only in the back of the room which ended up being the place where people got the chance to high-five Will Smith as the cast was leaving.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
So, yeah, nothing to dispel my perception that the only interesting or new thing about this remake is casting Laverne Cox (and then pretty much wasting her on a note-for-note Tim Curry impression). Why on Earth would I want to see recreations of the same costumes, the same sets, the same musical arrangements, and the same performances from the actors? Like I said before, the aborted Marilyn Manson version didn't sound like it was going to be good, but at least it sounded like it was going to be different.
It's like somebody went to see the movie, heard the audience shouting "Let's do the same shit again", and mistook it for a request.
At least they didn't change "Transexual" to "sensational" this time.

(I mean, I'm still gonna watch it.
If being good were a prerequisite for me to watch a movie, I wouldn't have lost count of the number of times I've seen the original somewhere around 40.)

(It still counts as seeing it if your back is to the screen, right?)

Yeah, it's odd. I guess they just saw the 30-year anniversary coming up and decided to create their own, identical Rocky Horror, presumably to show around Halloween every year.

Saw Suicide Squad. It was... as expected? Kinda janky, not great, but if you tolerated the likes of Batman v Superman or Thor 2 this is better than either of those.

...but the 30th anniversary was last year.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
Which would make this year the 31st. October 31st is Halloween. Ipso Fatso.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
Definitely looks lore interesting than the Charlie Sheen version.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
I liked Suicide Squad just fine, but all the criticisms are accurate. It's disjointed and tonally inconsistent, it's got too many characters, the big bads are boring and the last act is cribbed straight from Ghostbusters, the plot doesn't make a lot of sense and entire subplots get dropped without resolution (a good big chunk of the first act is spent on establishing that the head prison guard is an asshole and something bad is clearly going to happen to him, but it never does; the last time you see him Harley is hinting very strongly that the Joker is going to do something bad to him, but apparently most of Leto's scenes were cut and that must have been one of them because we never see the guard again), the members of the Squad are all inexplicably introduced twice, and the studio's "oh fuck, we've gotta make this movie more fun" re-cut job is mostly evident in that somebody quite clearly saw Guardians of the Galaxy and decided that the best way to make a movie fun was to add a bunch of classic rock to it.
I enjoyed it anyway. If any movie's going to be a schizophrenic mess, I think it's a good fit for this one.
Cast was good. Will Smith made a fine Deadshot; Margot Robbie's Harley was clearly the breakout character and rumor is they're already trying to figure out a way to put her in another, better movie. Viola Davis was absolutely perfect as the Wall, and it's nice that somebody seems to have finally figured out that no we do not want a tall, skinny Amanda Waller. Leto's Joker even has some potential; it's too bad he's so stupid-looking.

I think that's sort of the thing about Suicide Squad: It's got a lot of serious problems and it's easy to identify those problems, but it somehow manages to be an enjoyable ride regardless.
Re: Let's all go to the movies~
There seems to be a thing or two out of place in this terrible trailer for a shitty superhero movie.
