What? If you sign up for the humble monthly and they bill you and you cancel you get the stuff for that month. Period. You can absolutely sign up for 1 month to get games you want and then cancel anytime; I have, patito has, smiler and nodal both have, etc. It absolutely works.

However, it seems like they're selling a dirty line after all and you're paying for two months: There's 19 days left in this Humble "month", you don't get the XCOM key for 15 days, and beat says you have to cancel at least week before the next month to avoid being billed for a second month.

Well shit. Thanks for, uh, taking one for the team I guess. $24 for XCOM 2 is still a pretty good deal at least.

You get the XCOM 2 key right now, you just have to click through for it. I did, and I got it, and it's there. The issue was, I have XCOM 2 now, but not the DLCs for it. I want to play it with the DLCs installed. Do I buy the DLCs now and start playing? Do I not, and then wait to play until February 3rd, in case they're included in the unrevealed "rest of the bundle", because if they are then I've wasted $20 if I buy them now?

That I have to debate this is a shit deal.

TA wrote:Well, good point, so I grabbed it. Now I see this "the rest of the bundle will unlock Feb. 3rd" and I wonder whether that means the thing I just paid for, that Xcom 2 is part of?

Here's what they do:

They reveal one game out of each monthly bundle a couple of weeks (a month?) in advance, to entice you to sign up. That game is downloadable immediately upon payment; the rest of the games in that month's bundle unlock at the beginning of the month.

XCOM 2 is part of the February bundle. If you sign up for the February bundle, you can download XCOM 2 immediately. On February 3, the remainder of the games in the February bundle will be announced and become downloadable for anybody who's signed up by then.

Unless the rules have changed since the last time I did it, which was just a couple of months ago.

TA wrote:Should I wait to get the DLC until I see whether it's included in the rest of the bundle?

I'm not aware of any previous instances where they've sold a game as the "face" of an upcoming monthly bundle and only revealed the DLC was part of the bundle later. I doubt that February 3 will roll around and you'll find out that it includes a bunch of XCOM 2 DLC; the rest of the games will likely be just that: other games.

TA wrote:Uggggh this model is garbage.

It seems a little silly to me too, yeah; I don't play games at a rapid enough clip for a monthly subscription to make sense. But as far as "buy one game for $12 and get a mystery bag of other games a few weeks later", that's often not a bad deal.

No, he should already have the download key for XCOM 2, and get the keys for the remaining (currently unannounced) games in the February bundle at the beginning of February. One game gets announced early and is downloadable immediately on payment; the rest of the games are not announced until the deadline, and then you get them at that time.

Humble Bundle loves to sell at a loss, they are probably not screwing you.

Oh okay, I thought TA was saying that he didn't get ANY of the keys right now.

Not sure if I want in on this or if I want to see if there'll be a deal with the DLC later. Also, I want to get my nickel's worth of XCOM 1 first (which I am playing now and haven't gotten to Enemy Within or Long War yet) so I doubt I'll be playing this for another 2-3 months at least.

A friend of mine who has played tons of XCOM 2, including playing it as a featured LP streamer is telling me that the DLC is not only unnecessary, but arguably makes the game actively worse. I am trying to wheedle an actual explanation as to why he thinks so out of him.

Apparently one of the DLCs adds alien bosses who will Fuck You Up.

That's the only one I've heard about. Like it's not that they're hard, they're stupidly-unfair and crappily-designed hard - they get an action for EVERY ACTION someone on your squad makes.

Okay, it seems like the DLC is just terrible, period. Three of them are almost entirely cosmetic, adding extra cosmetic soldier gear as well as maybe a small irrelevant thing with no game impact (one of them starts you with a throwback vet soldier and I think another has some similarly small effect).

The fourth one introduces still more cosmetic stuff, but also a series of "boss monsters" which appear randomly and are so broken that only the worst masochists are enjoying them (like, the kind of person who doesn't just play Ironman, they also set fire to their computer if they lose a game). Among other things, they get a full reaction action for EVERY ACTION your soldiers take, on your turn.

Apparently there are mods to fix that DLC, but wheeeeee no thanks. Not in a hurry to spend money on any of that.

I wouldn't call Shen's Last Gift cosmetic? It's an entire sixth class of soldier, giant battle robots you build and deploy as soldiers, as well as story mission content introducing it.

The new class is kind of a mashup of existing classes more than it's a new class though.

Took me a minute to find it, but I asked about the DLC a few months back (turns out it was earlier in this thread) and here's what Mothra said:

Mothra wrote:Rock Paper Shotgun did a recent writeup of how the DLC's affected the main game, and they weren't entirely sure if it was objectively better with it included.

Rock Paper Shotgun wrote:‘Better’ isn’t the correct operative term, I think. ‘Different’ is, and honestly, that’s exactly what I wanted from DLC – a good reason to play through XCOM 2 again. As a total package, it’s substantial, even if not the equal of the Enemy Within expansion for XCOM 1 – though I hold out some hope that we might yet see something equivalent for XCOM 2 next year. If you’ve got the season pass but hadn’t yet gotten around to it, I’d recommend leaving the Anarchy’s Children box unticked then ploughing on into a happy new world of bright pink robots and man-size snakesuits. It’s a more diverse game now for sure – but on the other hand, if this is your first time with XCOM 2, I very strongly advise playing a campaign without the DLC to start with, or it is very likely to break your head.

Sounds like robot DLC is definitely worth it, with the boss-battle DLC more something you'd add to significantly up the challenge.

Personally, I'm waiting till some of this goes on sale to pick it up. I'm a little disappointed they haven't added any new enemies, or challenges, just weapons and allies.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the robot DLC.

The new character class is, in essence, the robots from Enemy Within. They're very strong (maybe getting close to too strong sometimes?), and they're fun to use.

I'd definitely recommend Shen's Last Gift, if it's priced reasonably. Here's what I wrote about over on the XCom thread:

Mothra wrote:I bought Shen's Last Gift before doing the Commander difficulty last campaign, and really enjoyed it. Good story, very fun three-part mission, and you get an insanely overpowered unit for the rest of the game. The Spark robot is basically the prototype of what Advent would eventually use for their killbots, and as such, has like thrice the amount of health as a regular soldier, with armor stacked on top of that. It also hits hard with armor-shredding ammo, and can (using a cooldown ability) make 3 moves a turn. That is massive when you get to Sectopods and Gatekeepers, and it's just very nice to have when you're facing down Mutons or Beserkers.

Definitely planning on building more than one of these when the option becomes available, since I honestly can't see any downsides.

Also: Sad that you don't get to use Lily after Shen's Last Gift. She really does come together as a very likable character by the time you're through.

I'm curious about Alien Hunters, since I really love the idea of random encounters in the middle of regular missions, in the vein of the Avatar encounter. It was really intense, in a fun way. Only thing really keeping me from getting it is the price, since 3 palette-swaps of existing aliens with some minor differences doesn't really scream "worth fifteen dollars" to me.

In related news that I'm putting here for that very reason: Long War 2 is out and works in vanilla so fuck the pay mods, this game just got better than decked out Enemy Within.

I didn't mention it, but I did pick it up.

A fellow I know is on the pavonis mod team for Long War 2 (JoINrbs) and has been talking it up (he's the one who mentioned the Humble deal to me) and it sounds SUPER fun. The reviews are out and they're REALLY positive, so all of this sounds great. Here's the quick version:

JoINrbs wrote:blog post on strategic changes is live this morning: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xcom/comments/ ... es_to_the/

"Long War 2, the upcoming XCOM 2 mod for PC from Pavonis Interactive, includes some dramatic changes to the strategic gameplay side of the game. This mod completely overhauls the Geoscape and how you engage in XCOM’s operations throughout the globe.

Players are now tasked with managing the Resistance within each region they have contacted. Each region has a certain number of rebels who may be assigned to one of three different tasks: scrounging for supplies, recruiting new rebels and soldiers, or gathering intelligence to generate new missions. You’ll also be able to deploy a single adviser – a scientist, engineer or soldier – to each region to provide bonuses to a particular task, and may improve a region’s defenses by capturing ADVENT MECs and repurposing them through the advanced Specialist perk, “Full Override.”

Rebels can die during retaliations and other missions, and even some can be Faceless in disguise. Keep this in mind when assigning tasks to your rebels, Commander.

ADVENT won’t be sleeping while this is all going on, Commander. The enemy has employed a new strategic AI that will be operating counter to your own efforts, under the same goal of finishing the Avatar Project. ADVENT will try to move forces from adjacent regions to your location; if ADVENT feels safe in a region, it’ll try to construct research facilities to further the Avatar Project. If you’ve managed to drive ADVENT out of a region, they may return in force to try and take it back.

Additional changes include the ability to deploy multiple squads simultaneously to infiltrate several enemy targets at once. Each of those missions will be played individually. We’ll have more info on some of the other changes to Tactical gameplay in the future."

My personal favorite thing about the mod. There was almost no framework for this game to have a strategic layer prior to these changes, and now there's an almost entirely-new dimension for people to explore strategically. The first time I sat down to play the game I got done with Gatecrasher and saw these changes and my brain fell out of the back of my head.

Original X-Com is free on Humble Bundle.

If anyone picks this up, I'd super advise using XComUtil to fix all the bugs they never patched.

You can preorder Cosmic Star Heroine for a couple of bucks off for the next day or so. It's the new game from Zeboyd (no relation) and looks like Chrono Trigger mechanics in a Star Ocean setting with Lunar-style cutscenes.

Since it's a preorder, of course, there's no way of knowing whether it's any good or not. Judging by Zeboyd's past output, it's reasonable to assume that it'll have interesting mechanics but be very clearly a game made by two guys.
