In the sciences, we recently lost astronomer and physicist Vera Rubin, who joins Lise Meitner and Rosalind Franklin in the perpetually disappointing category of "women who fully deserved and did not get Nobel Prizes". Even the AP obit has maddening phrasing about "helped find" vs. "did find".

Double whammy in that they were all Jewish women (I'm not quite certain about Rubin, but Franklin & Meitner were for sure).

Not that being Jewish has ever been a big barrier to receiving a Nobel, but for other forms of recognition, it may or may not have come into play at times.

Hey, man, dead's as stable as it gets.

And aside from Fisher, Adams, and Rubin, the great Duck Edwing of Mad Magazine.

Carrie Fisher was a heavy advocate for mental health. She had her own problems, and constantly talked about how it didn't make you less of a person. Even at one point correcting herself - "I had mental problems. I still have them. Bring it on."

This one honestly hurts more than most, if only because of how close it was. Star Wars and Mental Health?

Fuck.

On top of everything else, Carrie Fisher's mom, Debbie Reynolds, just had a stroke. Geez.

With the sudden string of celebrity deaths, it seems we overlooked Dr. Henry Heimlich.

Ironic, how much he was desperate for attention later on. Turned into a real nut.

Funny enough, I just noticed that the trashy UK Express properly and unreservedly cited Rubin as "The woman who discovered dark matter". Well!
