Re: Oh those pet peeves
People are mad because it seemed like Simplicity had stolen a lot of designs from indie designers who were not given credit or compensation.
Fine, be mad. Post at them saying "you have lost my business and are a poopyhead." Don't threaten to kill them, geez.

Re: Oh those pet peeves
Oh I misread that as being an intended collaboration or such. Okay it makes sense for people to be mad (but as you say, not killing people over it).
To be fair though, it's not anger over a sewing pattern; it's anger over people's probably-precarious livelihoods.

Small independent artists get kind of touchy when big organizations copy their work and make money off of it without paying the artist.

I got the context. I'm not justifying death threats, as a reasonable person capable of recognize the expansive gulf between "This company has wronged me personally" and "You, representative of the company that wronged me, deserve to be tortured to death".

Re: Oh those pet peeves
I meant the bit where I explained that I misread Silver's first post.
My response is basically the same as yours once I realized the "collaboration" wasn't an intentional, authorized above-board thing: Yeah a corp ripping indie designers off is bullshit and they're right to be very angry. No they're not justified in sending frothing-at-the-mouth death threats.

Re: Oh those pet peeves
I think there is a happy medium between 'frothing-at-the-mouth death threats' and calling corporations that actively engage in IP theft 'poopy heads'.

For sure.

That this has even moved into the realm of "pet peeve" (ie a low-key annoyance) is downright alarming. We're starting to normalize this shit.
Re: Oh those pet peeves
Well, the people making the death threats have already normalized it, obviously.

Re: Oh those pet peeves
This is definitely a first world problems thing, but I really hate it when friends tell you to a buy a game you're already very lukewarm about so you can play with them.
Like the game isn't so bad that you can simply say "I Hate that game/It's no fun" and that's true and the end of it, it's just... okay; you wouldn't buy it on your own. I don't mind doing so to play with LOTS of friends who play the same game, especially if it's cheap, but if it's a more expensive game and it's only one friend I really feel like shit when I say I'm not gonna buy it (which is of course a part of how Steam, etc. makes their bucks!). No matter what you reply, even if it's the whole truth, it's also half excuse.

I saw a flashy new cargo van go by today belonging to some company or other. The side was dominated by what's apparently their corporate sales pitch/motto:
"Dynamic analytics in the open-source cloud!"
*grits teeth*

"Unreliable summaries of data from somebody else's API." I suppose that's at least honest.

Re: Oh those pet peeves
Movie theatre websites that do everything in their power to not tell you the prices of their tickets, forcing you to go to a fucking third-party website just to find out what the damn price of a movie is.
Re: Oh those pet peeves
Thats actually a function of contracts with their on-line ticket retailers. Movietickets.com and fandango.com both don't allow you to post that info anywhere else but their website. Or at least in our contracts they dont.
Its stupid, don't get me wrong.

Re: Oh those pet peeves
I actually didn't go to the commerce portal, I had to go to a movie fan site.
I wouldn't have minded if I only had to click a link to take me to the fandango (or whatever ticket sales) page for the film from the Cineplex site - one more click is not exactly the end of the world - but when I DID press the "Buy tickets" link, the online retailer page instead wanted me to sign up for a purchase account and that's when I was like "I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT IT COSTS TOMORROW NIGHT FFS".
(barring the unexpected, we're all gonna go see Thor Ragnarok tomorrow).

I'm replaying Deus Ex and sometimes I realize that I will never use all 20 of my lockpicks but I level up lockpicking to use less anyway

Some days I forget that I am living in a Philip K Dick novel.
And then I start gassing up my car and the fucking pump starts blasting fucking commercials at me.
