This has been my project lately. I'm using Clickteam Fusion.
I have to apologize to Zaratustra for stealing his 4four character.. Kind of, it just kinda looks like it because of the round glass helmet... I couldn't make any other helmet look good.. I couldn't make this one look good.
Also sorry for the quality of the video.
This video is like a month and a half old. I'm a little further into the game. I lack motivation but I will keep trying. Ugh. So hard to do anything.

no problem man i still have your two 4four games they wre great

Black background so you can see what it will look like... kind of, more details in the backgrounds. I want a look of early videogames where most of the screen was black (pac-man, galaga, mappy, Donkey Kong, Metroid itself kind-of)
Hud is in the crosshairs. 3 balls on top are hp. "Pulse" is the weapon type. Other elements get added as you get stuff.

The NES Batman did a heck of a lot with black in its backgrounds.
I don't think it's exactly the look you're going for, but it demonstrates how when black is used correctly, it can evoke deep, rich shadow.
And I dig the cursor-only HUD. There's probably a fine line to walk to make sure it doesn't look cluttered, but with clean enough icons/symbols I can see it being really convenient.

That's one of the best looking NES games.
