Well, nice job everyone. Things are slightly less on fire and y'all can get some sleep.

Cool, what are we gonna do now?

I liked the idea when I first heard of it, and then I heard about it on Radiolab. If it's anything like they say, it could change everything. But this is America we're talking about; you can count on us to do the right thing... after exhausting all possible alternatives.

AFAIK, as of right now ranked voting in Maine is only for federal offices. While LePage is the specific reason that the state introduced it, it turns out that the state constitution explicitly allows candidates to win state office with a plurality. So ranked-choice can't go into effect for state offices without a constitutional amendment.

Expect an effort to amend the Maine constitution for that reason.

The 2020 Senate race may be the one to watch there. Collins isn't going to have the kind of broad bipartisan support she's enjoyed in the past, and even if there's a third (or fourth!) candidate in the race, ranked choice means the anti-Collins vote won't be split in the final count.

Arizona's Senate race is still too close to call. As the count stands right now, Sinema is trailing slightly -- by less than the number of votes that went to Green Party candidate Angela Green, who last week dropped out of the race and endorsed Sinema (after her name was already on the ballot and early voting had already started).

I wonder what it would take to get ranked preference voting on the Arizona ballot.

I bet we could get the state Democratic Party to go for it -- even if Sinema wins, it's going to be close enough that they'll want to avoid another election like this.

I'm sure the state Green and Libertarian Parties would be onboard too.

Republicans...probably not. They've recently rewritten the rules so that Greens can get on the ballot and Libertarians can't, so at this point they're pretty happy with first-past-the-post. (That's the party, though. I think Republican voters might go for it. I've known a lot of Republicans who'd be voting Libertarian if they didn't think it would be a wasted vote.)

ETA: Okay actually I figured out the Republican case for ranked preference:

Former Republican state AG Grant Woods has announced that he's mulling a 2020 Senate run as an independent. He could split the Republican vote and put a Democrat in the Senate.

Also, one hell of a headline: "Deceased Nevada brothel owner Dennis Hof wins state assembly race, weeks after he was found dead at his Love Ranch brothel by porn actor Ron Jeremy."

The home state of NC did very ok. We fixed our Supreme Court (despite the absolute best and most nakedly corrupt efforts of the Republicans) and broke the veto-proof majority in the statehouse, so in two months and after what will almost certainly be a veritable Hurricane Florence of terrible new laws, the constant flow of pigshit from our current state legislators will be somewhat stymied. We ended up passing four of the shitty proposed amendments (hunting with "traditional weapons" is now constitutionally protected, as are Marsy's Law, a voter ID requirements, and the inability to increase the income tax rate beyond 7% (currently at 5.5%, used to max at 10%)), but we stopped the legislature-appointed judiciary (rather than executive) and preserved our Board of Elections appointments.

We were still voting in districts illegally and grievously gerrymandered, as the federal courts determined we didn't have time to get freshly drawn districts before this election (so we've had to vote in unconstitutional districts for 6 years straight). The results ended up with NC's federal representation being 10-3 Republican over Democrat even though Dems took over 50% of the vote in the state, which feels really good and a lot like a functioning representative democracy is supposed to work.

It's worth noting that, even where Republicans won major races, Democrats had important victories.

Beto lost, but Democrats had major victories in the Texas appellate court.

Gillum lost, but the map might look different next time since Amendment 4 passed.

Georgia’s secretary of state Brian Kemp doxes thousands of absentee voters.

Exactly what it says on the tin. Just dumped the full spreadsheet on their website as a download link because what could go wrong.

Potentially good news (but don't get your hopes up too far): With each recount, the Georgia and Florida races are getting closer. Georgia has a huge amount of absentee and mail votes completely uncounted still and they're almost all from heavily Dem districts.

Also, Kemp resigned as SecState, which means he can't directly fuck with the election anymore (I'm sure he has loyalists lurking though). So a runoff where Abrams has a chance is looking more and more like a real possibility.

If even one of those two states flips, that would sure be a welcome bonus. Also, fuck Kemp with a tent pole.

Apparently, recounts are to be formally announced in the Florida Governor, Senate, and (lol) Agricultural Commissioner races.

Informally, Rick Scott looking increasingly nervous. We can only hope that for once a Florida recount breaks for the Dems.

A judge blocked kemp's office from certifying him as the winner of Georgia's governor election and ordered them to provide updates on provisional ballots and work with voters whose votes were rejected.

Current round: Kemp 1, Georgia 1. FIGHT!
