A friend of mine who has more than his share of problems, but is quite a good writer put this up on his Facebook.

I saw it when he copied it over for the MTG guys so that "I am copying this from my Facebook so that if it pisses of my relatives and they report it and somehow get it taken down I can go right back and post it again."

Recently I have seen a lot of posts mocking people for saying the Confederacy is their heritage when the Confederacy only lasted five years. I have even shared some of those posts myself, but after thinking about it more, it's not the five years they really want to represent with that flag. The five years is just the part we let them get away with glorifying. To the people that wave a confederate flag, it represents generations and centuries. That flag represents 20 Slaves brought to Jamestown in 1619. It represents the first slave auctions in New Amsterdam in 1655. It represents six million men and women sold as livestock in the 1700's and it represents the slaves in Texas who were forced to work for two years after the Emancipation proclamation had become law. It represents every hooded white man burning a cross in front of a black family's home during reconstruction and it represents every diner and lunch counter that refused to serve 'colored' veterans coming home from WWII. It represents men and women of color who are railroaded into private prisons so that states can meet their quotas of supplied prisoners for modern slave labor and it represents a white man kneeling on a black mans neck for almost ten minutes while he slowly draws shallower and shallower breaths and finally dies. It represents four hundred unbroken years of vile poisonous hate and I refuse to let them off the hook for one god damned second of it.

Goddamn right, though I think "What do you mean it's your heritage? It only lasted 5 years!" kind of implies all that. It's a way of saying that the traitor flag isn't really about Jefferson Davis or Robert E Lee, it's about racism.
