The oceans are dumped in because no one owns it, we need to privatize it (so everyone in the plant owns a piece) if you try to dump trash on private land, you’ll get caught, if someone owns part of the ocean and you dump it, they get to sue you in court. This is how you fix it

Obviously that's not how fluids (or capitalism) work but I wouldn't object to a world where dumping shit in the commons got you a legit class action lawsuit from eight billion names.

Writers are loath to draw a line between the fact that they’re poor and the fact that four out of five of their patrons get their books at no charge. Most of us grew up in libraries. We love libraries. Our first library card was as important to us as our first driver’s licence. We do our research in libraries and meet our audiences in libraries. We think libraries are important civic institutions. It is difficult to conceive of them as problematic, so we ignore inconvenient facts to shield libraries from embarrassment.

Librarians defend their activities by claiming that they introduce readers to new authors and that surveys show people who borrow books sometimes also buy books. That is all true, but it doesn’t alter the fact that four out of five books are read at no charge.

imagine yourself poor

Honestly, I can't pick just one quote. This whole thing is wonderful, glorious madness: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion ... ket-share/

jokes aside, this is what I mean when I say (and it's not like I'm the only one saying it) that Boomers literally cannot conceive of what it means to not have money. They live in a bubble world, a separate reality that does not allow for people to not have enough money to buy food. Maybe they can sort of kind of grasp the concept if it's like, in a far away land somewhere where people with the brown skin live, but here, in America, everyone is doing good, right? And if they're not, they're fucking lazy, because I worked hard (no I didn't) and was able to buy a house and all the food and everything else I wanted and things have not changed at all even a little bit from when I was 30 years old.

Also, the next time a Boomer tells you that hard work is how to get ahead, ask them why the Mexican migrant farm workers aren't getting ahead then.

Or, to save time, just make them work 12 hours a day in 100 degree weather for a week and then give them fifty bucks and tell them they're a rapist.

The Boomers have basically been this generation that sucked all the money to itself from generations both before and after. It turned out to be an accidental experiment in making an entire generation into a spoiled rich kid.

Meanwhile, how about something a little sillier.

Oh for sure. My parents for example live in desperation mode. But they still have some of that mentality.

Real conversation with my mom:

Me: "I really didn't expect there to be such a homelessness problem here."
mom: "What are you talking about, I haven't seen any."
M: "...Literally every corner of every major intersection has people out all day with signs asking for money."
m:"oh, they're not homeless. They have places to live, they just do that because it's good money."
M:(internally)"aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

My buddy from the middle of nowhere Ohio said that his redneck parents were watching the game and his mom's response was "Well okay, I hope you're all done saving for retirement then".

Though what's killing me most is that username/handle combo.

Actually, animals kill & eat each other because we kill and eat them. If we stop, they'll stop.

I like to think we're all pretty jaded around here about just how dumb things can get.

But have you ever been stopped in your tracks by witnessing or hearing something so mindbogglingly stupid that you're quite literally temporarily paralyzed? Jaw drop and all.
