Re: Insane in the Ukraine

There's this manga called Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku, or Legend of Koizumi, which ran from 2006 to 2015, and features former Prime Minister of Japan playing mahjong to settle diplomacy with world leaders. Here's Putin:

Re: Big Boss: Good or Evil?

Big Boss is exactly whatever the current video game needs to be. In Metal Gear 1, he's the protagonist's trusty mentor, until he needs to be the end boss. In Metal Gear 2, he's the bad guy now, and all the war crimes or wahtever that justify Solid Snake's mission are Big Boss' fault. Solid Snake's t...

Re: Big Boss: Good or Evil?

hng's video has spoilers for MGSV but the main arguments it makes are as follows: - Big Boss never actually employed child soldiers. He did keep war orphans, which he planned to train into soldiers, which he would use in other wars, which would create more war orphans for him to recruit. He didn't s...

Re: Big Boss: Good or Evil?

The general sense is that Big Boss first got into nukes in the 1970s, when he stole one from the CIA. Since a mercenary group on an oil rig is technically not a nation state and not a signatory to any nuclear treaty, they were within their rights to deny the IAEA inspections. However, they can't aff...

Re: Big Boss: Good or Evil?

To be honest, it's entirely reasonable to play MGSV without having played any of the previous games. The key backstory elements will be recapped through cassette tapes and overheard conversations between soldiers on base. It'll still be fun to go back and play through the history of Big Boss even kn...

Re: Big Boss: Good or Evil?

In MGS3, The Boss realizes that borders are a social construct and going to war against former allies for political reasons is some bullshit. Her solution is to unify the world, which doesn't really pan out, but it impresses everyone she worked with to take a crack at the problem. In Peace Walker, B...

Re: TNG Episode Tier List

My interpretation was that Data weighed the odds and decided that killing Fajo was the most morally correct course of action. If Data did nothing, Kivas Fajo would continue his crimes indefinitely, including murder and slavery. If he killed Kivas, Data would be morally compelled to turn himself in f...

Re: TNG Episode Tier List

Fun fact: This episode's main antagonist shows up in Star Trek: Picard despite being a one-off here. While ST: Picard is a hellscape that cannot be described in mortal words, it shows how impactful this episode was that its characters and themes were brought back up 20 years later. My theory is tha...

Britain deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda . To be clear, they're not deporting Rwandan asylum seekers back to Rwanda. They're deporting all asylum seekers to Rwanda, a central African country 4,300 miles away, where they will be instructed to apply for asylum in that country. One of the first peopl...

Re: The Star Trek Thread

JMS wrote entire seasons by himself, then had a cameo where he's a patient being wheeled in after collapsing from exhaustion, still clutching his keyboard. They cut the scene, but it's the perfect representation both of Babylon 5's dedication to a single continuous creator's vision, and how readily ...

Re: The Star Trek Thread

Babylon 5 is definitely worth watching. I think DS9 is better, but B5 is still worth watching on its own merits. I think the best way to watch it is to have seen a handful of episodes back in the nineties, then to come back and watch it now, so that the nostalgia covers up for the dated CG and set d...

Re: The Star Trek Thread

According to JustWatch, all of DS9 is currently on Netflix in the US. Better watch it all now before they realize and squirrel it away to a proprietary service. "Binge watching" is the popular way to consume media now, I hear.

Re: The Star Trek Thread

There's a video where someone asks people to describe Deep Space 9 characters (Odo, for example) without mentioning their species, ethnicity, rank, or station. They are able to do this successfully. Next, they're asked to describe a Voyager character - Chakotay, for example. They are unable to do th...
