I'm with Thad. I can't read what happened, but I'm so incredibly sorry.

To clarify, I'm not in grief, I'm really more shaken than anything else for a number of reasons. It just felt like this is the sort of event that I would keep entirely to myself at my own risk. Either way I understand any decision to refrain from acquiring further information and I appreciate your sentiments.

It was a genuine accident, and you were responding to an intrusion you couldn't exactly ignore.

That said, the wish to avoid needless death (if that's what I'm seeing here), that's something I can relate to. Even insect euthanasia bothers me a bit, as silly as that might seem. It's difficult with animals or creatures of any sort, as few creatures possess a capacity for spite or cruelty, and even among those extremely few will ever act on a human out of same; most of the time they're just going about their critter business. Why put out those little lights when they're no threat to you? Since we're usually the bigger critters with all the tools and toys, why would we not try and resolve any little conflicts while doing no harm?

Something like what happened to you would bother me too.

To the others: It's not a particularly gruesome description, nor are there images or anything. It's not unimaginable that the content warning might be valid for some members, but IMO Zed is simply using an abundance of caution. Nothing wrong with that though.

The anxiety's getting to me. Worst it's been since, oh, right around this time four years ago.

I'm putting one foot in front of the other. Trying to avoid the news, making sure I work out, medicating as needed (and don't worry, I'm staying within the dosage printed on the bottle). Forgot to take my BP meds this morning, so that wasn't great; having to go outside with the dog every morning (instead of just opening her door and leaving her to her own devices like usual; the vet said we need to make sure she takes it easy for a few more weeks because of that torn ACL) has thrown off my morning routine and I've been missing steps that are usually rote. So I thought I was just anxious but it turned out I was anxious and took my BP meds 12 hours late. Honestly couldn't tell the difference between today and yesterday (when I took my meds as normal); that's kinda how things have been these past few days.

Work was busy enough today that I could spend time focusing on IDEs and command lines and documenting stuff for the new teammates, and that was nice. It's always better when you have shit to do, things that require your immediate focus so your mind doesn't wander.

I'm worried about the election, I'm worried about the months that will follow, and then, best-case, come January I can settle down to worrying about how manifestly ill-suited Biden is to tackle the challenges of our age. And also that there's a plague, still.

Thanks for being here, guys and gals. I don't know how well I'm handling all this, but I'm glad I'm with friends.

I'm glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.

I'm 2.7mi southeast of the evacuated areas of the Silverado Fire. I have no idea how far I am from the actual fire because nobody wants to share that information, but basically I've been hitting refresh constantly on anything that might give me a heads up before kicking me out of my home. I've been annoying #finalfight incessantly about this and, honestly, I'm sorry y'all.

https://maps.nwcg.gov/sa/ has satellite fire detections on it. The satellites each only sweep once every 12 hours, but it'll probably give you a better picture o| the situation than it sounds like you've been getting.

To get rid of unhelpful noise on the map, I recommend turning off the "active incidents" layer completely, and removing the "24 hours" and "48 hours" layers from the satellite info.

Yeah, same.

Anyway, I remember shooting you a PM after Trump won four years ago and I'll say the same thing now as I said then: We will get through this.

And, amazingly enough, some of my idea of "maybe this will wake up the left finally to the problems of the world" actually came true. Well, COVID probably had a lot to do with it, also.

But, yeah. I (and everyone else) am here for you. And your sanity.

Again, we will get through this. I was thinking, the other day, that's it's actually absurd to think that any given person would not live through "interesting times" in their lifetime. Maybe like 1000 years ago when tech was more stable you could have a life as a peasant where for 80 years nothing really happened except some guy took over your land and you paid taxes to him instead of the previous guy. Or if you lived 10,000 years ago in California or Canada as a native. Whatever.

You get my point. In modern times, it's inevitable that any given person with a lifespan around 80 years is going to go through an upheaval or two. Or three. How many is it for us Millennials now?

In any case, this one is bigger and far more threatening. Fascism isn't "taking root" in America, it's taken root and is now extending its reach by leaps and bounds. But we're fighting back as best we can with what we have.

And if what we have doesn't work because Trump cheats, then we'll find new ways to fight back. Violence and suffering at the hands of the fascists is coming, and already happening. But no tyrant lasts forever.

When I feel really down, which is often nowadays, I think about how there is no future in which Trump is celebrated. Sure, he may win another 4 years. Or 12. Or whatever. Or the nukes might come down and kill everyone. But there's no possible future in which a kid opens his history book in 2270 and reads "in 2016, the best President ever of the United States was elected."

It will instead talk about how he was an abysmal failure as a businessman, a leader, and a human being.

That doesn't stop the very real death and suffering he and his kind are causing worldwide right now, of course. But I do still manage to take some small satisfaction from it, nonetheless.

anyway. Chins up, all that. You're a great guy and we've all got your back. Take care of yourself.

Go for it.

Okay, the courtroom was a circus and we needed police escort because the inept wannabe-mafia family waited around in the car park for half an hour thinking they'd get to beat us up(*), but their case has been thrown out, the legal system has now turned around and started looking real hard at them, and no-one's getting a criminal record they didn't volunteer for. Sleep nao.

Also the defense lawyer was super cool (for a merciless warrior beast) and we're definitely staying in touch with them. S++ grade contact there.

Friday, I've put out questions to the manager class androids I'm still in contact with to see what they remember about specific strategies deployed during The Event.

(* This part is hilarious if you've met our frivolously accused friend, who has 'squaddie' written through his core like seaside rock candy)

May all your enemies be dumber than rocks.

Legit scary in the moment though, just because you can't usefully predict how dumb they're going to be. There may be no limit.

I keep forgetting to post here because:

My dad keeps sliding further and further down the insane hole. He voted for trump this election.

I had a cancer scare.

The oregon fires. YEAH REMEMBER THOSE. FUCK. I cried when the smoke lifted two weeks later and I saw a blue sky again. I was terrified, I had a shit to go bag, Friday saw me melt down more than once in irc over it.

I did find out, though: I like putty.

I haven't been to a barber since...I don't know when. The Before Times. Definitely not since March, but I'm not sure how long it was before then.

A few weeks back I decided I may as well just have my wife cut my hair, but figured we'd wait until it cooled off enough to do it on the back porch so we wouldn't have to worry about hair getting everywhere in the house.

We kept putting it off because it kept being miserably hot all the time, but today it only got up to 66 so we went ahead and did it.

I think it came out pretty well and I'm not sure I'll ever be going to a barber again.

In theory I should never go to a barber since my haircuts are dirt simple.

But I just love going to the barber; it's so relaxing.

Plus our local barber grossly undercharges us (we've been going there for a decade and are still receiving the "half-off Mondays" price from a deal she hasn't offered in years, and regardless of the day of the week). I used to try to tip her more, but she gets legit mad about that. I kinda gave up trying after the time she chased me down to return the extra two bucks I'd quietly slipped on the counter.

As a guy with less hair than Thad (no offense, just a good example) I used to love to go get my hair cut. Get a buzz and beard trim, then a "shampoo", all while just shooting the shit. It was a nicety every couple of months.

Baby spider (doo doo de doo de doo) on my desk, checking out my mouse pad. I can't consume internets this way...

Baby spider moves on. Now he's shopping for a keyboard key to squeeze under. Except I have a silicone membrane over my chiclets to keep my slopjar self from destroying my keyboard. Checkmate, Peter Parker.

Then he's strolling across my desk towards my case. Good luck buddy - I've got one of those cases with fan vents and caps that admit nothing larger than a cat hair.

Except by this time I've noticed he's got a half-inch string of silk trailing out behind his bum, and this has picked up all sorts of cracker crumbs, cat hair, eraser dust, and other prize finds, and he's starting to become aware of the drag it's creating behind him. Except when he goes backwards to try and pull it off, it spooks him and he runs out across the territory in a big hurry to get away from it. Lather rinse repeat across my desk and onto the windowsill.

At this point I've tried coaxing him onto a piece of torn index card to taxi him under the sink where all the tasty bugs are, but he's given me the finger (?) pedipalp? twice and fucked off in another direction.

That is basically the highlight of my day today how about youse?
