Incidentally, am I the only one mildly annoyed by use of the term "Lo-Fi" as a positive?
I get that language does its thing, but "Low-Fidelity" is literally saying it's a worse quality of recording.
Re: Hot Tweets Cool Treats
And some people prefer that worse quality for whatever reason. Music is all subjective.

Lo-Fi usually means it was passed through a noise filter and is still presented at 41.1k or greater bitrate.
Why the fuck did I write bitrate now people are going to correct me.
I meant sampling frequency.

So, in most cases it's just fake bad.

I mean a little noise on really old records can underscore the tenuous nature of early (basically, pre-war) recording, of how this is stuff we barely have and in some cases we're extremely lucky any of it is preserved at all.
But, like, there's a pretty low threshold before that starts negatively affecting with the music, and even in the cases where it works, you're usually talking about solo acts or simple bands where the music is clear enough to come through a bit of noise.
A modern artist trying to do that seems hokey the way someone might do up a photo of theirs as a fake sepia-tone daguerrotype. Same deal with film and older-style colour palettes or camerawork. It can work, but it's usually affected crap.

The Coen Brothers fuck with the color levels in O Brother, Where Art Thou? to give it an old-timey 1930s sheen? It works! It really works!
Every action movie for the next 15 years cranks up the blue and orange levels because reasons? It does not work quite as well.

It reminds me of how after GotG, James Gunn apologized to the effect of "okay now there's gonna be a whole bunch of movies with wildly inappropriate 70's/80's soundtracks, that's my bad".
Or the fact that in 2017 (IIRC?), it became a meme that something like a half-dozen big budget movies were released which featured a scene where John Denver's Take Me Home Country Roads featured prominently.

If it's anything like Electroswing, then that's not bad at all.
EDIT: Oh that shit. That's fine. That's just sampling, really, and I don't think anyone here thinks sampling isn't legit music. Vaporwave reminds me of those musicians who make tunes with an orchestra made of old computer parts doing their thing.

I can't believe I've been this old for a decade and Mongrel's only catching up.

Maybe!
When I read about it at the time, apparently it was just because a bunch of Gen X directors were releasing movies that year. It was a worldwide coincidence, not just an American one, so adolescent nostalgia for Ghibli is just as valid an origin as childhood nostalgia for John Denver.

Re: Hot Tweets Cool Treats
All my early childhood musical nostalgia is for terrible 80's Canadian pop music, so if I ever get to direct a movie, I'll probably have to contractually promise not to use any Gino Vanelli in the soundtrack.

The year that The Touch by Stan Bush appears in the soundtrack for every movie is either going to be the year I finally become happy or the year I punch out all the mascots at Disneyland. I won't know until it happens.
