2014 is over or almost over depending on where you're sitting.

You know what I'll remember most about 2014?

...

If you do, please tell me.

I enjoyed a brief but memorable stint as Sideshow Marge.

Don't ask me. Even Google seems to think that the most memorable moments of 2014 were the World Cup, Ice Bucket challenges and the Philae probe.

For me this was the most time I've had off since University, and even though I've basically done fuck all, I've been very happy with that time.

I'm a stagehand. I work events, usually smaller events, like small award ceremonies or auctions held in hotels.

Tonight, I'm working. I'm clearing out a new year's eve party at 2:30 am being held at a hotel. For Swingers. One-hundred percent serious. They rented out the entire hotel for this party. They do it every year apparently. As we were finishing up our part of the set-up, they were carting in stripper poles.

I was explicitly told to wait outside at the loading dock of the hotel until someone came and got us. So, no, I'm not going to see anything. I'm just going to have to touch the aftermath.

2014 was pretty okay for me. I went to MagFest for the first time in January.

I bought my first car in June. It gets twice as many miles per gallon as the one my dad gave me when I got my license. And gas prices started dropping right around then and never stopped.

I flew in a plane for the first time and got to touch the Pacific Ocean. That was pretty righteous.

Well despite a promising and hopeful start 2014 was shit for my career and resume, but hey, at least I'm not unemployed (yet). I got to go on a bunch of trips and meet lots of dumb internet friends, which was super fun. I got a spinning wheel and started to make good progress into my fiber stash. The ever-growing yarn stash...is not a concern. Yes. Not a concern. At all.

All in all, a mildly positive year on average. Good job, 2014. I won't mourn your passing but at least I'm not dancing on your grave.

Like other people have mentioned... 2014 isn't really a year of massive social disparity relative to other years, it's just the year people decided to make it a big enough deal that it hit the national scene. Everything else that's been going on in 2014 has been overshadowed by my near constant outrage at the status quo for about 4 months.

I was downsized without compensation and had to look for a job and a house at the same time.

Got a job after an eight-month job search and moved back into the city. 2014 was good to me.

My now-former employer tried to call my bluff, so I called theirs. One application and three interviews (preliminary with recruiters, personality interview with manager, tech interview with now unofficial team lead) later I had a new job and re-gave my two weeks notice to the head of HR. (I'd previously gone "I'm prepared to quit because I'm unhappy with what I'm currently doing" towards the end of 2013 and they were all "no wait we can fix this" - they set a goal of fixing it by the end of January, they were only halfway through fixing it with no end in sight to the still-shitty compromise. So I said "I've got a job offer for more interesting work, this is my two weeks.")

Man, that place was shitty. One of my friends (the 'friend' who recruited me there in the first place) is currently being scheduled for at least full time hours, but he's still officially considered part-time and not eligible for benefits. All it would take is one or two "By the way, this is the bullshit they're pulling" to the state labor department and they'd probably get shut down. The head of HR explicitly told one applicant "You're entirely qualified, but I'm not hiring you because you have a criminal record". He said "Yeah, uh, that's illegal" and ended up getting hired.

My mom died in 2014. She was only 52. It sucked. Still, I'm at the point now where its mostly a deep feeling of depression when I actively run into something she would like to do, see or be a part of. Other than that I am OK about it. Basically I still miss her but I have made whatever peace I can with the idea that she's gone. It was hard for a while and you guys are a major reason I got through it so well. Special thanks for Stush, Smiler, Brent, FBM, Nodal, Patito, Kayin, BEAT, and anyone else from the skype crew I may have missed for giving me a place and conversation to escape too when I was at my lowest. You guys are great and I owe you.

I'm moving in the right direction, I guess, even if I don't have work right now.

I had a job that paid well at a place where I liked working, for a few months. I didn't like the sites we were building or the products we were selling, and I'm pretty confident the working arrangement was illegal, but nonetheless it was pretty good while it lasted, and it still feels like I'm moving forward in my career, even if it's agonizingly slow.

Moved into the new house. It's nice. I like it.

Dog's health problems seem to have gone away (though she hurt her foot a couple of weeks ago and still occasionally favors it), and wife got a new position that she's much happier with than her last one, and her health's been mostly good, so that's several major stressors that have gone away.

Things are moving slowly but in the right direction. That's good enough, for now.

Personally, 2014 was just a long extension of 2013. Some different projects, some different travel, but depressingly little new. An okay but unmemorable year.

In terms of the greater world, of course, we all need to find 2014's grave and piss on it.
