I mean, we're still catching up to Gatchas. Getting pretty close though.

Yeah the only game I play right now with MTX shit in it actively is Marvel Snap, and they crank that dial toward being worse about once every two or three months despite literally selling themselves as "the card game with no way to pay to win" (they have gone back and removed all advertising making this claim).

Nothing too brobdingnagian or relevant, but Panera founder surprised to find workers aren't motivated to make money for shareholders.
Y'ever wish you could just grab someone by the shoulders and just shake 'em really really hard?

I want to see interest in making money for shareholders vs. wanting to kill someone with lemonade.

I mean, the point of the article is that he gets that, not that he's surprised by that.
that very article wrote:At least one founder and former CEO agrees that the idea of boosting shareholders' returns isn't likely to be a key motivator to workers. Ron Shaich, Panera Bread's founder and former longtime CEO, has stressed how important it is for management and members of the C-suite to empathize with their employees and better understand what can get their buy-in to the company's mission.
"No employee ever wakes up and says, 'I'm so excited. I made another penny a share today for Panera's shareholders,'" Shaich told Business Insider in an interview. "Nobody cares. You don't care whether your CEO comes or goes."

I saw that too, but at the same time he seems to think he can make some money selling a clue to CEOs at large. Not that that's proof of anything, but it's not a huge leap from applying the assumption to him to instead applying it broadly to C-suite suits.

WB in talks to purchase Paramount.
Because the guy who keeps canceling Scooby-Doo, Batman, and Looney Tunes and then wondering why kids aren't interested in his streaming app is definitely who you want running Nickelodeon.

That's gross but nowhere near as bad as them terminating their entire staff

Microsoft lays off 1900 Activision-Blizzard and Xbox employees
Makes sense, they did just spend $69 billion to get Activision-Blizzard and someone has to be let go so they could pay Bobby Kotick several hundred million to leave

Re: Inspirational tales of Glorious Unfettered Capitalism
I feel bad for the staff, which is the most relevant point. On the other hand, "Oh no, there goes the quality of Blizzard games!" is somewhat less compelling.
Some of the luckier among those laid off staff might end up offering something nice though, so wish 'em luck (and wish 'em luck in any case).
In a broader sense, these waves of tech layoffs actually signal how dead the tech and IT sectors are and just how poor the leadership is. An entire industry's leadership are basically admitting to shareholders that they are dullards with no ideas left with which to pursue future profits - no plans, no vision, nothing - and this is the only thing they can think of to claw out more money for the machine.

god *damn* you, copyright enforcement and cryptobros, for making me side with martin shkreli
Re: Inspirational tales of Glorious Unfettered Capitalism
This is definitely a case where the odiousness of the defendant is screwing up people's perceptions, that they can't seem to realize this a DAO saying their NFT gives them the power over Shkreli's actions when he legally owned album and they didn't.
Of course, I'm one of those rare people that thinks a $2 million exclusive album makes the Wu-Tang clan less cool so maybe I'm in my own bubble

Re: Inspirational tales of Glorious Unfettered Capitalism
AFAICT the NFT is actually orthogonal to the legal issue here; they do own the physical album.
But as far as I know they don't own the underlying copyright, which should mean they don't have any grounds for legal action against Shkreli for making or distributing unauthorized copies.
They're making a trade secret argument here, which...seems pretty bonkers to me, but then, so does buying partial ownership in a physical album, as an investment, in the first damn place. (NFTs make everything stupider but I'd still think this was stupid even if they expressed their co-ownership of the album through traditional share certificates.)
Among other reasons it's a dumb argument, there's plenty of fucking evidence that the existence of unauthorized copies of a thing doesn't depress the value of a physical original. I once saw a CIB copy of Earthbound for $600 at my local game shop, even though you can just download the ROM from any old pirate site.
I think the preliminary injunction is a bad call, but hopefully the judge's final ruling is more sensible.

FTC announces "Click-to-Cancel" rule
Fucking finally, jfc
Ideally this would be legislation rather than an FTC rule but Congress no longer functions so this is at least something
The Federal Trade Commission today announced a final “click-to-cancel” rule that will require sellers to make it as easy for consumers to cancel their enrollment as it was to sign up. Most of the final rule’s provisions will go into effect 180 days after it is published in the Federal Register.
“Too often, businesses make people jump through endless hoops just to cancel a subscription,” said Commission Chair Lina M. Khan. “The FTC’s rule will end these tricks and traps, saving Americans time and money. Nobody should be stuck paying for a service they no longer want.”

I don't have a lot of hope for the future of the regulatory state under this SCOTUS, but damn I love Lina Khan.
