John McAfee

If the reported cause turns out to be suicide, I'd actually be inclined to believe that in his case.

I dunno, he was definitely a bizarre weirdo and probably rapist and definite murderer, but also he was always pretty insistent that he wasn't gonna do that.

John McAfee strikes me as the type of guy who would deny he'd kill himself right up until he got word he was being extradited to the US

Yeah, just saw those. Thing is, McAfee was a weirdo for sure and near impossible to take *anything* he said at face value. I could see him doing almost exactly that!

The main reason I doubt anyone bothering to suicide him is because even a slime mold knew McAfee wasn't someone you could trust to be discreet (or even coherent), so it doesn't seem like he was a member of any of the requisite Old Boys' Young Boys clubs. Instead he was out in the boonies of Belize buying kids on his own and not doing a very good job of keeping that a secret.

All that said, it's not impossible that he knew *something* and was in fact "$whackd". I just think that's a lot less likely in his particular case, that he's exactly the kind of guy who wants you to THINK he knows something.

EDIT: King just put it more succinctly.

He probably just had withdrawal complications.

A friend pointed out that on a practical level, this would have been a plausible strategy to prevent the guards from having him on suicide watch.

Even if someone else was involved it feels like his whole life was an extended suicide, Culture style. Just keep doubling down on crazy until your luck runs out.

Are we sure that he’s actually dead and not just running in the background?

well, he claimed he had some sort of dead man's drop in place. We'll find out in a couple weeks.

I guess we will!

If so, what do we think the odds are that it'll be a bunch of gibberish code (not necessarily computer code) that actually means nothing?

Steve Sherman, former assistant to Jack Kirby; later built and operated the OG Readmore puppet and worked on Pee-Wee's Playhouse. He tells some good stories in the video at the bottom of the linked page.

I'm seeing news that the author of the bsnes and higan emulators, Near, has died. CW: bullying, suicide, and God dammit these are the same shitbirds who went after Kazz and now I'm fucking bawling.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255.

Jackie Mason.

He was performing one of his one-man shows on Broadway when I was there in '05; I considered going to see it. From everything I've heard about the last 25 years or so of his output, I'm glad I didn't.

But he sure was a funny man, once.
