Oh to correct myself from yesterday, apparently the shooter wasn't upset about the Nippon Kaigi after all. Now the news is saying it was a religious group, with a lot of folks guessing it may have been the Unification Church (which is already deeply conservative, but also has a particularly loony-tunes-flavoured Japanese sub-sect where, among other things, adherents pray with/to assault rifles?!).

Japanese media has confirmed that it's about the Unification Church. But apparently it's because the shooter doesn't like them?

tt;cr (too twitter; couldn't read): According to Gendai Business, the shooter's mom was a member of the church, and the shooter says he targeted Abe because of Abe's close affiliation with the church.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

IIRC earlier stories ran that said the shooter thought the org in question had (financially?) ruined his mom.

Japan has a tendency to treat any newer religious groups as cults (and some of them are). The Unification Church has always been sketchy and the Japanese branch is especially weird, so could be the son effectively thought his mom was ruined by getting hooked into a cult.

One of those guys who was good in everything.

I'll probably always think of him as Ra's al Ghul first, but there are so many choices. Sometimes multiple choices in the same film!

He and Asner both got to reprise their roles before they died, on Teen Titans Go! season 6 episode 35, "Huggbees". (Alongside Paul Rugg and Joe Leahy, who are still with us.)

;___;

He'll always be a smoking hunk of pure evil in my heart.

Though I don't know how no one mentioned Gul Madred (among something like a half-dozen other Trek roles).

Probably no one sacrificed their career more for their role in Star Trek than she did. She and her character always deserved better than she got, but she was determined to have as positive an impact as possible and made the most of it anyhow.

I'd go so far as to argue that of all the OG Trek cast, it was Nichols who best wore the mantle of Trek's promises of a hopeful and progressive future in her own life, outside the franchise. Mad respect for her selflessness.

Still hurts like hell though.

I remember there was an ugly conservatorship battle over Ms. Nichols after she started suffering from dementia. I'm glad she's at peace.

So passes the Hottest Trek Girl. What an absolute smokeshow in addition to all her good works. RIP.

Also Gord Lewis of Teenage Head.

Allegedly killed at home by his own son. Goddamn.
