Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
A couple of related stories on Ars:
Shocker: Cable TV prices went up four times the rate of inflation
Bankrolled by broadband donors, lawmakers lobby FCC on net neutrality
Not exactly surprising (as that first headline notes), but nice to have the numbers in front of us.
Particularly galling is that the FCC ITSELF released the statistics on cable TV prices mere days after passing the new Protection Racket rules.

John Oliver breaks FCC comments site.
And if you haven't watched the segment, get on that. It's not quite as amazing as his climate change segment, but it's up there.

The FCC comment page went down AGAIN yesterday at deadline time; they've extended the initial comment period through Friday. Replies will be allowed through September 10.
I think it's fair to say that by now we've made our point and made it again. I don't think the FCC gives a fuck, but we DO have a massive public outcry enshrined in the record.

Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
Obama speaks out in support of net neutrality, suggesting it be treated as a utility.
In response, Ted Cruz tweets, I shit you not:
The FCC “should make it clear that whether you use a computer, phone or tablet, Internet providers (ISPs) have a legal obligation not to block or limit your access to a website,” Obama said in the two-minute video posted to The White House’s YouTube page Monday.
“The FCC is an independent agency, and ultimately this decision is theirs alone,” Obama said in a statement. “I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what you can do or see online.”
Under The White House plan, ISPs wouldn’t be allowed to block or throttle legal content. Paid prioritization, or fast and slow lane access, would be forbidden so web services can be accessed without paying an extra fee. Obama also called for the FCC to classify the Internet as a utility, because it has become indispensable in everyday life.

Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
"Net Neutrality" is Obamacare for the Internet
in that republicans will destroy it for no decent reason
Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
Seriously. If there's one thing the libertarians should get behind, that all rational independents would agree with, it's net neutrality. The Cruz camp isn't even trying.
Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
equal access to all sorts of internet services is akin to socialism.

Yeah -- in the same way that the interstate system is.

Apparently, the FCC Chairman just put out a statement claiming he's willing to consider the White House's Net Neutrality plan.
However the only outlet reporting this so far is HuffPo, so uh, give it a couple hours to see if the story looks the same as reported by other parties.

Wheeler's been saying a lot of the right stuff since, well, since about three days after that John Oliver segment.
Talk is cheap, and I'll believe the dingo wants to stop eating babies just as soon as he actually stops eating babies.

While we're at it can we make sure Comcast and Time Warner can't merge? I'd hate to have to sic Zombie T.R. on them all again.
Re: Net Neutrality (or, the lack thereof)
Ars is saying that Wheeler has "all but confirmed" common carrier classification for ISP's. He's also proposed redefining "broadband", which is a good thing:
I've got to admit he's making the right noises lately, but I can't help noticing he hasn't actually done anything yet.
FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler today is proposing to raise the definition of broadband from 4Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream to 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up.
As part of the Annual Broadband Progress Report mandated by Congress, the Federal Communications Commission has to determine whether broadband “is being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion.” The FCC’s latest report, circulated by Wheeler in draft form to fellow commissioners, “finds that broadband is not being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion, especially in rural areas, on Tribal lands, and in US Territories,” according to a fact sheet the FCC provided to Ars.

I'm with Thad in that I'll believe it when I see it, but yeah this is hopeful.
