Apparently Kickstarter is 'moving their business to the blockchain' next, which I'm reading as 'getting into money laundering while we burn this thing to the ground'. Can't find an overview article that's not on a crypto cheerleading site and/or unreadable morass of dark patterns & popups.

So here's this:

Kickstarter's announcement is so frustratingly vague and the response on both ends is so unhelpfully kneejerk that I really have no idea what the fuck is even threatening to be going on over there. I get the very real sense that this is a depressingly effective tactic on Kickstarter's part to remind the internet that they exist.

At this point KS is like, the entire miniatures industry outside of GW, so it's pretty hard for me at least to forget they exist. Though now I think I might want to...

I'm still a Firefox guy, but it's clear they've been flailing around for years looking for a funding source besides donations from their biggest competitor, and it's taken them to some weird damn places.

At least they've got the excuse of needing the money, unlike Microsoft building that financing service into Edge. What are you doing, Microsoft? You sell other stuff! Edge doesn't have to be profitable!

A bitcoin company in California recently commissioned the artist to do a two-metre tall sculpture of the head of Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk on the body of a goat riding a rocket into space.

"It's pretty exciting." said Stone," It's going to be driven around throughout the U.S.A advertising their Bitcoin."

NFT group known as SpiceDAO purchases a rare production pressing of the storyboards for Jodorowsky's never-made Dune adaptation for over $3 million - about 100 times what the book's estimated value - believing that it grants them the rights to create an animated series. They had also discussed plans to mint NFTs of scanned pages from the book, then burn the actual book so only the JPGs would exists.

I had begun to think that NFTs relied on the buyer not knowing how copyright works, but this is a bit too on the nose, honestly

All that beautiful Moebius art. I'll be in my bunk.

Every single time Jodorowsky's Dune comes up, I think of the sheer amount of talent and skill brought together for one film, and how even the wreckage of something which seemingly came to nothing ended up birthing nearly every major sci-fi movie of the 80s (and some of the 70's too - Alien was '79!)

Such an amazingly pivotal moment in cinematic and pop culture history.

Crypto dot com, most recently known for buying the naming rights to LA's former Staples Center, had $15 million stolen from customer accounts which is busily being laundered. No indication yet that they know how it happened, or will be covering losses, or anything.

If non-fungible schadenfreude is your thing, consider adding https://web3isgoinggreat.com/ to your rotation.

We appear to have reached the "dump" part of the pump-and-dump.

The problem is that it's crashed a bunch of times in the past without actually dying and I doubt this will be an exception. The inherent volatility of the scheme actually helps mask its ponzi nature and provides regular resets to bilk new rubes.

In any case, so much of crypto's supposed value is still just paper claims that I always just kind of eyeroll at the huge numbers they end up claiming.

Either way, I just wish this would all stop. It's all so complicated and insane and stupid at the same time, and that was before the apes came along.

To borrow from a Twitter follow, it all makes me feel like I'm hallucinating.

If you're looking for a documentary length break down of Cryptos and NFTs, Dan Olson recently published a video that goes over what exactly Crypto is, it's history since 2008 and NFTs. The tl;dw is that it's a giant scam factory
