Buttcoin
Re: Buttcoin
tl;dr since his account got outright hacked, rather than him being tricked into transferring them, New York law (which governs OpenSea transactions, where the most recent transfer happened) says that he still legally owns it and if he figures out who currently has said stolen monkey JPG he could sue them to get it returned.
Re: Buttcoin
That's the thing, by appealing to NY state to resolve the issue it suggests that the smart contract has zero legal bearing and instead the central arbiter of NFTs is the state, not the blockchain

Re: Buttcoin
Surely y'all have been keeping abreast of the news that cryptocurrency value is falling like a rock, right? Well, in addition to all the schadenfreude about douchy NFTbros losing their shirts, it's also had a positive impact on global carbon emissions.

This dumbass is about to discover the hard way that no, at least for the time being, you still cannot fire people just for being black.
Maybe further updates on this guy should go in the nazis thread.

As cryptocurrency tumbles, prices for new and used GPUs continue to fall
I'm still a little light from paying taxes in April and car insurance in May, but maybe I'll be able to rebuild my HTPC by the end of the summer.

Was literally talking with Starr this morning about when that effect might kick in.

I'm waiting for the 4-series cards to roll out, they'll either be snatched right up at which point I just try to score a cheap 3-series, or they'll be hilariously overstocked at which point... okay.

Re: Buttcoin
You know, I understand that mining also supports transaction costs, but I still don't actually understand HOW.
Is it just that the verification process involved in the transactions is distributed among active miners due to the decentralized nature of crypto, so fewer miners means less spare power for transaction verification?
If that's the case does this mean that the problem of ever-increasing processing cost to do blockchain transactions which was predicted to end old Proof-of-Work currencies like Bitcoin was only obviated by the massive increase in mining? Not that I'm sure Proof-of-Stake is immune to this.
EDIT: Saw this, which doesn't quite answer the question, but wow
All this time and I never realized they made mining zero-sum.
That makes so much dumb sense on so many stupid levels. It's just too perfect that once bros had widespread computer & internet access, that they would in-vitro conceive the love child of Mercantilism and Gekko's coke-saturated 80's.
Oh, also overheard today: "All my cryptobros are gone."

Yes.

Yes.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Ethereum’s “Merge” is about to put every ether miner out of work
As I've often said, I'll believe Ethereum's switch to proof-of-stake is really happening when it happens, but they've set a date and performed a dry run, so it's more plausible now than it was a month ago. (Or the month before that, or the month before that, or...)
It won't make cryptocurrency any less of a solution in search of a problem, but it will significantly reduce its environmental impact, so it'll still be good news if it actually happens.

Re: Buttcoin
No matter how many times I read about the way crypto functions or have it explained to me like a baby, the nuts and bolts of it all always seems to make my head hurt. I mean, I get enough of it to understand, but I feel like I'll never grok it.
Which is part of the point, I suspect.

If you're going "that can't be how it works, that's just too stupid" then you understand it perfectly.
