Yikes. If you're gonna speculate about whether somebody's a predator, maybe base it on something a little more concrete than "has a beard"?

I didn't even know Ellis had a beard now; my mental image of him has been "Unkempt Spider Jerusalem cosplayer" pretty much since forever.

So you've never seen a picture of him ever

Not in well over a decade anyway.
I wasn't saying I had an ACCURATE current mental image of him. "What does Warren Ellis look like these days?" is something I can't even bother to google right now. :D

Nonono it's not an appearance thing, just that he's now about the last of the powerful old dudes I grew up thinking of as a voice of progressive wisdom and I've been hilariously duped so many times now it feels fucking inevitable.
I may not be 100% well.

Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
Alan Moore's had his own particular variety of crazy on more-or-less full display for decades. While it's not impossible for him to have been hiding some other, much worse, forms of crazy all this time, it's unlikely.
Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
Alan Moore is fine, he just really has been screwed over. The worshiping a Snake God thing aside

Yeah, being angry about about getting fucked over so badly and for so long isn't the crazy part.

Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
By now, you've probably seen the unprecedented leak of a draft ruling by SCOTUS which would abolish Roe (wow big surprise). Thing is, the basis for this is that the entire concept of any right to privacy in the US is effectively undermined, if not doomed by such a ruling if it takes place. The right to privacy is the underpinning of SCOTUS rulings on:
- Gay Marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges, 2015)
- Homesexuality, period (Lawrence v. Texas, 2003)
- Contraceptives (Griswold v. Connecticut, 1965)
- Miscegenation (Loving v. Virginia, 1968)
- Porn. Yes, porn (Stanley v. Georgia, 1969)
- Protection from Eugenics programmes (Skinner v. Oklahoma, 1942)
- Parents' right to have their children educated at a non-English speaking school (Meyer v. Nebraska, 1923)
(Most of us probably know at least half those rulings by name)
In case anyone was wondering if the Republicans of 2022 won't try to revisit all that, well, RIGHT IN THE DRAFT, Alito mentions Lawrence and Loving as bad rulings (he also defends them at times, there's a lot of waffling, but there only needs to be SOME language for idiots to latch on to). Various State governments will absolutely try to pass laws testing every single one of those rulings.
I don't really like to post straight bad news, but this is kind of momentous and the implications need to be spread around to as many people as possible. Plus it's not a done deal yet, though if anything the leak might make the more feckless judges double-down on stupid.

I got nothin'. It's awful and my heart goes out to those affected and those who are justifiably afraid that they're next.

Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
Modest good news.
Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
As much as I'd love to hope, I find it hard to believe. I too come from a deep red community and there are a lot of people who seem capable of accepting almost anything as the "price" for voting for The Right Way. It's a possibility that they're mad now, but all it takes is one talking point from up top to get them back in line. "The ruling was flawed, this gives republicans a chance to write the law *well*" or something.
Could be wrong!

Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
There's a north-south divide on this one, I suspect. Dunno which side of the Mason-Dixon you're on.
Re: Barefoot and Pregnant
The north! It sucks! Had a couple kids in high school with confederate flags on their trappers. One time for "hero day" or whatever, had a kid come to school in a homemade KKK outfit, it was nuts. The kid's grandma was Japanese too, so, you know... I don't know the thinking...
BUT, to be fair, I grew up in one of the poorest counties in the state, at a teeny tiny rural school, so maybe it's more of just a good ol' fashion class divide.
Again, could be wrong!

Less than 25% of the US voting population wants abortion to be outlawed, which has been one of the most consistent political positions of the US for like 4 decades. America, by and large, does not want to outlaw abortion.
But that 25% contains a lot of wealthy, well-connected people whose interests align with laissez-faire business interests, and have formed a voting block out of this overlap
As with all things, the struggle for abortion rights is just another example of why the US political system needs to die in a fire

I started to write out a post considering the potential political ramifications in future elections, but nah, that still feels entirely too detached and cynical.
Suffice it to say this is not an issue that's going to go away with the news cycle.
