We've been pretty lucky this fire season, considering how dry and extremely hot this summer has been.
The largest fire so far started last week, hasn't appeared to hit any significantly populated areas, is already 20%, and, so far, would rank ninth largest if it had occurred last year.

Also, there's a large storm predicted to hit NorCal this weekend:

It's forecast to drop up to about ten whole Septembers' worth of rain. So there might be some minor flooding, but September isn't generally that wet, so I'm not sure how bad 10x the average September's rain will be, even if it is all at once, and it should help subdue the most major fire this year.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

The Mosquito Fire sucks, but just wait until the Fire Mosquitos show up

While part of me is relieved that this year (or at least this month) I don't have to be constantly PTSD about fires, now I have to be worried about floods. Technically I guess it counts as PTSD as I was flooded out of my house in the '97 floods, but I'm pretty much over that.

Not a story about California, but could probably apply just as well further south on the Ring of Fire:
When the Big One Hits Portland, cargo bikers will save you

Like I said before, my hometown burning down was just a preview of the megafires to come.

Not California, but relevant:

Lahaina, Maui has burned to the ground.

One of my favorite places to grab a bite when I was on Maui. Beautiful and historic town with a wonderful marketplace. My parents conceived me there, according to them.

Fun fact: This is where my mom was thinking of moving to after we lost everything in the Paradise fire. I guess I have to be grateful that I did not follow that timeline.

Had the news up in the other tab and when I flipped back there to read it, it literally says "the deadliest fire since the 2018 Camp Fire in California, which killed at least 85 people and virtually razed the town of Paradise."

Wildfires are now this deadly, we know... but that's some crazy fuckin' parallel on top.

Based on that map, seems like it's Baha that's getting fucked the worst. Not that a tropical storm is great news, but it beats an actual hurricane.

I guess what worries me is how this might not be the last. There's been a lot of talk lately about how oceans in general are getting warmer, and hey what happens in places where the water is hot? Oh yeah, hurricanes! Wouldn't that be great if my state becomes both drought land AND a hurricane zone?

I should probably go finish rebuilding my kayak.

Just can't make Californians happy. First there's not enough water, now they're complaining they're getting too much water, what is it with these guys

20 years ago one of my ecology profs made a joke about tracking fire clearance of forest on the Great Plains, and said "ok so here's a layer of carbon in the core 3 guesses where it came from, and nobody say "luau"

tl;dr: unthinkable. Just unfathomable :(

I'm still in shock over Maui as well. What do you even say?

But hey we're not flooding here yet, we're okay so far
