Judge rejects Sackler immunity deal, vacating Purdue Pharma opioid settlement

AIUI what happened here is that Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy and the bankruptcy terms stipulated that the Sacklers would personally be immune from any liability for the opioid crisis.

This ruling says "No, you can't do that; Purdue Pharma as a company can get out of liability by declaring bankruptcy but the Sacklers aren't personally declaring bankruptcy so they can't get personal immunity as a condition of a bankruptcy agreement."

Stephen Breyer announced his retirement from the SCOTUS

Now, it would be improper - perhaps even unconstitutional - for Biden to nominate a judge until the nation has had an opportunity to elect a Republican president in 2024

The good news is that Biden's judicial nominations have been mostly good, and the obstructionists haven't been blocking them.

The bad news is that they're not going to pack the court and no matter how good the new justice is they'll still be a 3-6 minority.

Or perhaps the more appropriate Simpsons reference would be "Dig up, stupid!" because he's still not clear on this actually-showing-up-to-court thing.

Alex Jones breaches court order by failing to show for Sandy Hook deposition after judge rebuffed sick claims
Infowars host claimed he was too sick to leave his home to attend Wednesday’s questioning - before his attorney admitted he left home to film his far-right show

Here's a thread going over the transcript of the judge's reaction (Nitter mirror):

Well, that lawyer better be getting paid well, because at this rate, they won't be able to practice law much longer.

I am seriously hoping that Alex Jones is one of those idiots who's so stupid that he didn't even hide his money properly and that the victims gut the son of a bitch for everything he has.

It's extremely rare for judges to refer attorneys for sanctions.

But it does seem like this is probably going to be one of those times.

A surprising bit of good news: Supreme Court backs landmark voting rights law, strikes down Alabama congressional map

Roberts and Kavanaugh with the liberals on the majority.

Supreme Court today issued a reminder that the court itself is just a building that can be razed and the justices are mortal humans, same as the rest of us

Yeah, I know there are people the Court has hurt a lot worse than me, but I sure didn't need another 5-digit bill tacked onto all the other ones I've been dealing with.

Paco, we can still split a six-pack if you're ever in the neighborhood.

One thing that does not get a lot of attention in America is how lax and lenient our false advertising laws are in comparison to other industrialized countries. There's a whole rabbit hole of American companies going to Japan or whatever and just getting absolutely reamed over and over for decades if you're into that sort of wistful "wow, I wish our laws would actually protect the consumer" fantasy daydreaming.
