I do remember Romney spent a good chunk of the '12 campaign talking about how we needed to be focusing on threats from Russia and everybody kind of made fun of him for being stuck in the past.

TBF I do think he was thinking about it from a very 1980s-centered perspective. I think his concerns and remedies were off the mark, but at least "don't underestimate Russia, they still have the power and desire to really fuck up global affairs" is a valid concern.
