Disasters, natural or otherwise
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
TBF, this is coming out because of an investigation into plastic recycling that Frontline and NPR started over two years ago, after China stopped accepting foreign waste.

Legitimately hope that Jox & Mali, Niku, and anyone else still down there is holding up and has resources to stay safe.

But also this isn't a natural disaster as much as it is capitalism failing completely when remotely stressed, as it does.

Yeah, I just read about the Texas power grid and I'm like, okay that's not funny anymore :(

Now you know why they hate snowflakes so much.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
If class warfare erupts in Texas because freezing people in the suburbs go apeshit because they can see the city lit up like a christmas tree I'm going to lose my god damned mind. Never mind all that though, dastardly green energy is at fault
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Jox and Mali were (are?) without power but have a gas stove and were keeping warm as of yesterday. My parents lost power for about eighteen hours Monday, and we were only out for about eight hours yesterday but have had almost zero water pressure since Monday. Which I’ll take over no water.
Ventured out to make sure the cars started yesterday, but otherwise just waiting for things to thaw. Checking this morning, something like 41% of our energy provider’s customers are without power and we’re a powered pocket right in the middle of their current outages, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we go dark at some point again today.

I'm sure you're up on these things, but be careful. I saw boil water orders, especially around Corpus Christi if that's near you at all, stemming from breaks that reduced water pressure.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Yeah, we're in a boil water order, but we've got several jugs of drinkable in the fridge.
Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Hey we're alive and have had power since like 11 PM last night. It is cold as fuck though and even being from the north (or perhaps because I have the experience) I don't think I can drive in this weather with the lack of attention the roads have gotten, so we're just hunkered down, boiling water and trying to stay warm. Before last night our power was shit. We went from like 2 am on monday morning until like tuesday morning without power then it was intermittent all day until last night. We think our water heater survived but don't know about the pipes between the house and the heater as they're frozen but not leaking.
On top of all this I work for Wal-Mart and despite them probably excusing all my absences (I had to call in sunday and monday because of weather and will have to tomorrow too) when I ask them anything about it they just say that all weather related call-ins are excuse on a storm by storm basis and they can't tell me if I will be excused or not.

Literally "The ocean's on fire."
The superlative safety record of Gulf of Mexico oil platforms continues unchanged, I see.

Not sure if I should post this here or the Covid thread, but apparently the city of Orlando, FL, is facing an unprecedented water crisis because the liquid O2 they use for water treatment is being diverted to hospitals to provide Covid patients with Oxygen.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.

Re: Disasters, natural or otherwise
Small FYI, Typhoon Odette hit the city of Cebu and a ton of the surrounding islands/area in the Philippines really hard. There's "only" 80 deaths, but damage is estimated at nearly half a trillion dollars US, and this isn't being covered very well in news cycles for a variety of reasons. If you're in the habit of sparing a few bucks for relevant charities when big disasters hit, you might want to send a few here.
